I am new to this genealogy stuff but have been trying for awhile to trace my mothers ancestry. It has been difficult because most of her ancestors were in Canada and there doesn't seem to be as much information avaiable. My mother's great grandfather was Edwin R. Gifford b.5/7/1826 in Haldiman county Ontario Canada. He married Mary Ann Cooper b. 1827 He was one of 8 children born to John Robert Gifford b. 10/12/1800 in New York state - died in 1872 in Haldiman County Ontario John Robert was married to Rebecaa Mead b. 1804 in Canada John Robert's father was Perry Gifford but I can't find anything else about him yet. If anyone recognizes this line of "Gifford", please contact me. My line starts with one of two men. Elisha Gifford (who came to America around the time of the Mayflower) or Walter Gifford (who came to the Massachusetts' Bay Colony around 1630. One of these men had a son named Absolom Gifford, who was born in Connecticut, fought in the American Revolution, and later lived in Herkimer county, NY. Absolom (his wife is unknown) had the following children: 1. Absolom 2. Martha 3. Mary 4. Nehemiah 5. William 6. John 7. Allen 8. Mary Ann 9. Elisha (my descendent, see next entry) 10. Martha Henry (number 1 above) 1st wife: Maria Wolfe (unknown if any children), 2nd wife: Mary Vaughn (married her in 1840) Together Henry and Mary Vaughn had the following children: 1. Mary Ann (married Asa Sample) 2. Maria 3. Sarah (married Fleming Carson) 4. Martha (my descendent, see next entry) 5. Henry (married Laura Russell Martha (number 4 above) is the last descendent in my family genealogy with the name Gifford. She was born 9/27/1848 @ Wolfe Settlement, PA.(I have no idea where this is) She died on 6/4/ 1920 @ Liberty, Tioga co., PA. She is supposedly buried in Wellsboro, Tioga co., Pa. To: Calvin Gifford You might be interested in The New England Historical and Genealogical REGISTER Vol. 128 Oct. 1974 and Jan., 1975. The Gifford's were serialized over 10 years. The Jan., 1975 issue states: Probable children of Joseph and Hope Gifford: Ananiah b. 10 mar. 1703/4 probably on the Manasquan River; mar 27 Jan 1733/4 Mary Halstead and had children Amos, Anniah, Joshua, Hannah and Sarah Gifford. Listed in 1748 as a freeholder, in Shrewsbury Twp. of Monmouth Co (GMNJ, 17:40) No further record has been found. The cited issues did not confirm the wives last names until Ananiah Gifford who married Mary Halstead. Wm. Gifford's last wife was Mary Mills but I did not find a Mary Danforth unless I skipped over it. The NEHGR issues quoted wills which you might find interesting.

I have finally transcribed the Gifford family Bible I have. I am sorry if some of the info is missing, like places of births, marriages, and deaths, but I am still working on my research, and will fill in the info as I get it. FYI-Charles Kendall Gifford is someone that I have not found on anyone elses files, so this might be of interest to anyone who can link to this file.
