    3. 'Love bug' still infectious, but using different names The Associated Press The "love bug" that crippled computer systems around the world showed up again Friday cloaked in new disguises, pretending to be such things as an e-mail joke or a receipt for a Mother's Day gift. Anti-virus software makers rushed out updates to fight the variations, and the FBI expanded its criminal investigation of an outbreak some experts say could cause up to $10 billion in damage. As many as seven new variations struck on Friday, a day after the original raced across at least 20 countries, overwhelming computer networks and destroying important computer files. The original bug arrives as an e-mail labeled "ILOVEYOU" and carries an attachment called "LOVELETTER." One new version arrives as confirmation that the recipient's credit card has been charged $326.92 for a Mother's Day "diamond special," urging the reader to click on an attachment to print the invoice. Opening the attachments releases the bug. "This will be the most damaging virus as well as the most widespread virus or Internet worm that we've ever seen," said Gene Hodges, president of the McAfee security division of Network Associates, a computer security business. Some organizations suffered heavy damage, as the virus destroyed files storing crucial information, pictures and video. Jeff Carpenter at the CERT Coordination Center, a government-chartered computer emergency team at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, said the bug infected about 600,000 computers worldwide. As an example of the disruption, CERT projected the virus cost a company with 12 computers a total of about $30,000 in lost work time and recovery. The FBI and authorities in the Philippines were investigating leads suggesting the virus originated in Manila, including clues embedded in the virus' program code and information from an Internet service provider. "It could be a lead or a red herring," said one FBI official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "We're not at a point where we are able to definitively say what the origin was." The first copycat version of the virus began whipping across e-mail systems by Thursday night, masquerading as a joke passed on by an acquaintance with an attachment labeled "Very Funny." Although it was spreading with the same lightning speed as the original, computer security firms reported far less damage among their customers -- possibly due to software inoculations deployed on Thursday and a more wary attitude among computer users who were caught off guard by the first attack. "It's definitely calming down, at least with 'LOVELETTER,"' said Sal Viveros, a director at McAfee. The joke version "is spreading very very quickly, but nowhere as quickly as 'LOVELETTER' because people are really aware of not clicking on attachments, and many people got a cure for 'LOVELETTER' that blocks new variants," Viveros said. McAfee and other anti-virus firms said they were receiving only isolated reports of the Mother's Day version and another with a subject line reading, "Susitikim shi vakara kavos puodukui," which translates from Lithuanian as "Let's meet tonight for a cup of coffee." In all cases, however, experts cautioned computer users not to open any suspicious e-mail attachments. Friday's victims included United Nations headquarters in New York, where the e-mail system was temporarily shut down as a precaution even as the organization was grappling with a hostage crisis in Africa. There were several attempts to quantify the extent of the outbreak, which most experts agreed was the worst yet in scope and damage. Computer Economics Inc., a research company based in Carlsbad, Calif., said 45 million people worldwide received the infected e-mail Thursday. The company estimated damage at $2.6 billion for the first day alone and as high as $10 billion before it's contained. Viruses caused an estimated $12.1 billion in damage during all of 1999. Seattle-based Safeco Corp., which has more than 11,000 employees nationwide, was among the businesses that turned to handwriting, telephones and other means of communication as the virus forced them to shut down e-mail and instant messaging systems. "This thing has caused a major hassle," said Le Roi Brashears, a spokesman for the insurance and investment company. "We had to resort to digging out the floppy disks and using pencil and paper." ------ On the Net: National Infrastructure Protection Center: http://www.nipc.gov/ CERT Coordination Center: http://www.cert.org Anti-virus companies: http://www.symantec.com http://www.nai.com http://www.drsolomon.com

    3. Thursday May 4, 9:31 am Eastern Time Company Press Release F-Secure Warns: LOVE LETTER e-Mail Worm Might Exceed Melissa in Severity Activates by Overwriting Picture and Music Files SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May, 2000--F-Secure Corporation (formerly Data Fellows) [HEX: FSC], a leading provider of security for mobile, distributed enterprises, is warning e-mail users of a new destructive e-mail worm called VBS/LoveLetter. This worm spreads by e-mailing a file called LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs. F-Secure Anti-Virus detects and disinfects the virus, with the latest update available from www.F-Secure.com. ``This worm spreads at an amazing speed,'' said Mikko Hypponen, Manager of Anti-Virus Research at F-Secure Corporation in Espoo, Finland. ``We got the first report around 9:00 a.m. on Thursday from Norway, and by 1 p.m. we had reports from over 20 countries. We estimate that total number of infected machines is already in tens of thousands. This epidemic might exceed Melissa in both speed and destructiveness.'' The LoveLetter worm activates by overwriting picture and music files from the local and network drives. Files with extension JPG, JPEG, MP3 and MP2 are overwritten and will have to be restored from backups. The worm arrives to users in e-mail message attachments called LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs. On a default Windows system, the ``.vbs'' extension is not visible, and users might mistake the file for a harmless text file (.TXT). If the recipient opens the attachment, the worm will use Microsoft Outlook (if installed) to send a message to everyone in any address books (including global access books of the organization these typically contains hundreds or thousands of addresses). The messages is as follows: From: Name-of-the-infected-user To: Random-name-from-the-address-book Subject: ILOVEYOU kindly check the attached LOVELETTER coming from me. Attachment: LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs As address books typically contain group addresses, the result of executing the VBS/LoveLetter worm inside an organization is that the first infected user sends the message to everybody in the organization. After this, other users open the message and send the message again to everyone else. This quickly overloads e-mail servers. In addition to spreading over e-mail, the worm also overwrites existing local script and HTML files with its own code. The worm was most likely written in the Philippines. It was first spotted in early morning, Thursday May 4. It contains the following text: barok -loveletter(vbe) <i hate go to school> by: spyder / ispyder@mail.com / @GRAMMERSoft Group / Manila,Philippines VBS/LoveLetter is written in the VBScript language. By default, programs written in VBScript operate only under Windows 98 and Windows 2000. However, Windows 95 and NT 4 users are also vulnerable, if they have installed version 5 of Microsoft Internet Explorer. A technical description of the virus is available in the F-Secure virus description database at: http://www.F-Secure.com/v-descs/love.htm Sample pictures of e-mail messages generated by VBS/LoveLetter are available in the F-Secure virus screenshots center at: http://www.F-Secure.com/virus-info/v-pics/ About F-Secure Corporation F-Secure Corporation is a leading developer of centrally managed security solutions for the mobile, distributed enterprise. 3. In response to Gordon Walk's comment about duplicate headstones, there is the possibility that there were 2 gentlemen with exactly the same or very similar names buried in the same graveyard. If, in fact, this was a duplication on somebody's part, then we can only hope that it is a very limited occurance. I would like to believe that if this is a duplication that the party responsible, did so while making a sincere effort to document the past and the life of somebody either dear to them or dear to their memory. 1. [GIFFORD] Elizabeth ("Betsey") Gifford (Bly/Blye)
    2. Hi all, Elizabeth("Betsey") Gifford (1805 - ?) was born in New York and had migrated to Erie Co., Pa. by 1834. She married David Bly/Blye who was also born in New York in about 1805. They were living in Northeast Twp., Erie Co. in 1850 with five minor children according to the 1850 Census. Betsey was the daughter of the Revolutionary Army soldier William Gifford (1754-1758 - 1846) who also migrated form New York to Erie Co., Pa. We do not know if the Blys remained in Erie Co. or moved elsewhere after 1850. We have no vital records (dates and locations of births, deaths, marriages) of either them or their children. Any help would be greatfully appreciated. Best regards, David

At the time, I was only addressing the subject of the law and genealogists' rights, not genealogists' responsibilities to each other in spite of the law. The Court case involved a telephone company that tried to protect its telephone book of customer names, addresses and telephone numbers from being completely copied by another company. The second company published its own book and competed with the original company for yellow pages advertisers. The first company claimed that the new company should have to go door-to-door to get the information for themselves. The Court said that the second company had the right to copy all of the data that the original company had collected. The Court reaffirmed the importance to society of factual information being available to all parties. The country can only advance by building on what has been learned before, rather than everyone being required to do the original work for themselves. There would no time left for advancements to occur if we had to start at the beginning every time. The application of this court case to genealogy, as I see it, is that we can copy as much data from a website as we wish, including an entire database. When we visit a website, the website owner's copyright does not extend to the factual information such as the baptism, birth, marriage and death dates and places, or the names of the people involved. Only creative additions such as colors, backgrounds, fonts, bolded versus normal, choice of coding perhaps, and some other things would be protected by copyright. That means that on our personal computer, the data may NOT have the same look as it did on the website. However, when we do a copy and paste of the website records, the cut and paste procedure automatically eliminates all of the copyrighted features that I mentioned, so what we get is the raw, uncopyrighted data. We don't have the right to copy commentaries or stories. They would be copyright protected because they are creative efforts, although the facts in the commentary or story can be extracted (facts can't be copyrighted). If the records are arranged in some unusual manner, a copyright might extend to that unusual arrangement. Alphabetical or chronological arrangements in columns, tables, or in a paragraph form would not be unusual. Last name first would not be unusual. No matter how they are arranged on the website, the records themselves cannot be copyrighted. If they could have been, LDS probably would have done it long ago when they copied so many of the church record books which we so gratefully use on microfilm today. I believe that copying data from a website is legal. I have no idea about whether or not it is legal to repost it on a different website. Whether it is legal or it isn't, I feel certain that the vast majority of us are totally against anyone pirating another person's data to post on their own website without permission. And to pass it off as their own work would make the offense morally irresponsible, as Lorine has already pointed out. Because of the existence of links from one website to another, it should be completely unnecessary for a person to take data from another person's site to post on their own site. Such links allow a person to be creative in the selection of what subjects and titles they would like to see on their own website without having the actual data present. The really important thing about a link is that the person who did the work gets the credit for the weeks, months, perhaps years of effort that they expended. Nobody should try to take away from them the recognition that they deserve. If complete databases are lifted and then reposted elsewhere, we will lose talented, good-hearted people like Lorine from our midst. How genealogists act as a group will determine what website opportunities we have in the future.
