    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jhan1230 Surnames: GIBSON, SUMNER Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.gibson/5740.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi- My Garrett Gibson, married to a Prudence Sumner in Surrey (Stokes) County, NC, in 1778, was born in Scotland in 1742. According to The Gibson Family compiled by Carolyn Elder, they were living in Grainger County, Tennessee, in 1799. "This Quaker family owned 150 acres in Surry Co., NC on Pinchgut Creek. Pinch Gut Creek is located on the west side of Surry (Stokes) Co. below Highway 89 going to Mt. Airy and just outside of Westfield where the original Quaker Toms Creek Meeting House (later known as Westfield Meeting House) was located. Tom's Creek Meeting House was founded in 1771-1772 and it is believed the Gibsons may have helped found it. "GARRETT was a Quaker overseer of the Lost Creek Monthly Meeting. The Gibson family lived in Surry, Stokes Co, NC from 1779 through 1798, according to NC tax records. They resided in Grainger Co., TN, in 1799, and in Jefferson Co., TN between 1800 and 1816. Quaker records show that on 15 February 1800 GARRETT and his brother Valentine transferred from Westfield (Old Tom's Creek, NC) to the frontier Quaker settlement of Lost Creek, Jefferson Co., TN where they are recorded in the Quaker records 22 March 1800. Lost Creek is located just south (where James and Barnabas located according to those records). Since Grainger and Jefferson Counties adjoin, perhaps all these Gibsons were neighbors even though in different counties. GARRETT is shown in Lost Creek in some court actions and witnessing the will of Joseph Williams on 7 August 1804. "However, by the 1810 census, GARRETT, Valentine, Barnabas and their families are recorded in Knox Co., KY. Knox Co. is a little east and north of both Grainger and Jefferson Counties, TN. The families apparently split in Knox Co., KY, however, for PRUDENCE (wife of GARRETT) and family are found in Greene Co., IN (south of Bloomington) about 1810. PRUDENCE GIBSON is listed in the 1813 tax records of Vance Twp., Greene Co., OH without GARRETT between 1813 and 1826. We thus assume GARRETT died about 1813 in Jefferson Co., TN, Knox Co., KY, or Greene Co., OH. We have not found any reference to his death in the Quaker meeting minutes." I have his parents as John James Gibson with wife Nancy Garrett. They had three childen (James, Garrett, and Archelus (b.1762). Curious what you hold on this line.
