He is listed in the 1891 & 1901 Canada census' as James Goodspeed, with his wife Nora. In the 1860 U.S. census, Rufus Goodspeed, age 37, and his wife Harriet, age 24, are listed living in Montgomery, Franklin, Vermont. Also listed is their daughter Fanny, age1, and Rodney M. Gibson, age 5. Rodney M. would have been born in 1855. Harriet and Rodney M. were both born in Canada E, now Quebec. I am sure that Rodney M. GIBSON is James Rodney Merritt GOODSPEED. The "History of the Goodspeed Family", by W.A. Goodspeed, says that Rufus Goodspeed and Harriet Stone were married 15 Aug 1858, making Rodney 3 years old when his mother married Rufus. Rufus and Harriet had twin girls, Edith and Edna, born in 1862 . Rufus and Harriet both died in 1865. The "Goodspeed Family" book mentions their daughters, and who they eventually married, but no mention is made of Rodney M., who would have been 10 years old when his mother died. The entry of Harriet's death in the Montgomery Town record says that her parents are Salva and Almira Stone. In the 1851 Canada census, a Harriet Stone, age 15, is living with Almira Gibbs, age 52, in St. Armand, Missisquoi, Quebec. Also in the home are two boys, David and Daniel Ingalls, ages 5 and 16. All were born in Canada. Interestingly, the 1860 U.S. census lists a Monroe Ingalls, age 27, as a farm laborer living with Rufus and Harriet. Maybe Salva died and Almira married a Gibbs? Maybe the Ingalls in Almira's home are her grand children or nephews? Maybe the Ingalls are Harriet's nephews or cousins? Maybe that's why Monroe was working for Harriet's husband? The 1850 U.S. census lists Reuben and Mary Ingalls living in Enosburg, Franklin, Vermont. Reuben was born in Canada. Their oldest son is Monroe, age 16. Enosburg is about half way between Montgomery and St. Armand. Maybe Almira and Ruben are siblings? Maybe her maiden name is Ingalls? The names of Gibson, Gibbs, Stone, and Ingalls are very common in Missisquoi County, Quebec, in the last half of the 1800's. How much relationship is there? Lots of questions!!! My biggest questions, however, are what happened to Rodney M. when his mother died and is who is Rodney M. Gibson's father???? If you have any information that can help me tie any of these loose ends together, or if it appears that I have information that might tie up some of your loose ends, please contact me. Thank you.
