I hope having more than one person looking for clues will bring some progress in the search. Just a bit more for you. I have found the 1860 US Census in Illinois lists Maria Gibson as head of household, plus the children George, Frances, and (Ruth) Eleanor and a farm hand, but no listing of Elisha. That's what made me wonder if he was ever in the military - or if he was off for a while on other business. In the 1870 US Census, Elisha is back as head of household on the farm in Illinois. By 1880 US Census, it seems the family moved to Nuckolls County, Nebraska. I have PDF copies of most of these census pages, but they won't upload here unless I change them to some kind of picture format.
