I am 'WAY out of being able to participate! But I thought I'd like to put in a query with you so that if you ever have anyone who links with my ancestor, they might be able to let me know. The ONLY Gibson I'm fairly certain of is: William GIBSON (b c1750) md Feb 1773 Mary BURTON (perhaps in Chesterfield Co VA), d. c1791 in Bedford Co. VA. His parents may have been Thomas Gibson and WORLEY. The children of William and Mary BURTON GIBSON were: Elizabeth md BLACKWELL (my line) Nancy Mary md EUBANK Sarah md HARRIS John md EDISON Martha md EDISON William L. If anyone fids a link to this family, I would surely like to correspond. One further note: this is in my mtDNA lineage so am anxious to find more about Mary BURTON. So far 39 results have been posted to our Results Page. A number of these show genetic matches in branches previously unknown to the individual researchers! At this time, we have what appears to be the potential of 29 distinct Gibson lines. Six of these show roots in Scotland, Ireland, or England. It has put people together who previously did not know they share a common ancestor and has eliminated others where they thought a match would/might occur. That way they can focus their traditional research in a more productive manner. Can you imagine the research hours saved if this tool had been available 20 years ago ... or even 10? DNA is not the "end all" in genealogy research, it is just one more tool to be used in conjunction with tradition research methods. > > > > I often hear: "I wish I could participate, but I don't qualify." In those cases you can help in a very important way! In the event you don't have a father, brother, uncle or known male cousin, you need to be asking any Gibson researches you think you may connect with to participate or have their near relating Gibson males do so. It would also be a tremendous boost to have more participates from the British Isles. The most successful surname projects have the largest number of participants. > > > > One final note, there still seems to be some prevailing thought that DNA testing involves needles and blood, it does not! Mary-Gene, Thank you for your reply. I know how you feel. I lost my Gibson when my 3nd great grandfather, Rev. Randall Gibson died in 1836. Not surprisingly ours side of the family has totally lost contact any Gibsons in that line. Nevertheless, that does not keep me from continuing to look for them. At some point, I am still hopeful of coming into contact with a descendant of one of his brothers (of whom there were many) or his one uncle that I know about. Did William L. leave descendants? If you know anything about them you might try to see if you can trace them to a living Gibson male. Gibson is a pretty common name, there seem to be many distinct Gibson men who came into colonial America and later. While some are found in the north, New York and Pennsylvania for example, most of our contributing members seem to have roots in the south before moving on to TN, KY, TX, etc. I don't think that I am being overly optimistic when I say DNA will ultimately play a huge role in helping us figure all of this out.
