> From my digest I can't determine who posted the information about this John Gibson family - Johanna King perhaps? In any case I thought it might be worth pointing out the name MILROY/MILLROY is a surname whose bearer can usually trace their roots back to South West Scotland and Wigtownshire in particular. It is one of my direct lines and of particular interest to me. MILROY was never a wildly common name so you might tackle a search for MILROY-GIBSON marriages. My MILROY family sailed from Stranraer in 1774 aboard the "Gale" and most settled in NY though one reportedly went to Canada. There was also a GIBSON aboard that ship. You could search passenger and immigration lists online for details. Hope this helps! Hi Pamela, My maiden name is Gibson also and, like you, my Gibson family were early settlers to New York, although my Gibson family migrated to Upper Canada (Ontario) during the 1812 war where I found land purchase records for them. I too still cannot 100 percent confirm the father of my John Gibson, born June 1799 in New York, after 30+ years of searching, although I did finally find some baptism records in Long Island for a David Gibson whose son John Gibson was baptized on the same date in 1799 and David is most likely his father. One broken brick wall leads to another fully intact. I am suspecting that David Gibson was a military migration to New York during the American Revolution when New York was controlled by the British or was a Loyalist during the British occupation. Early records are few and far between for both New York and Ontario. Just for the Gibson record, baptisms recorded for David Gibson in Long Island include: Elizabeth Gibson, 1794 David Gibson Jr., 1797 John Gibson, 1799 Peter Gibson, 1803 Catherine Gibson, 1804 David Gibson's marriage record date of 28 Aug 1789 is also recorded in the same church. The early Ontario land records for David Gibson also list John Gibson, James Gibson, James Gibson Jr., and William Gibson in the same settlement, thought to be David Gibson's brothers/sons/nephews. Around 1839, after the 1837 Rebellion in Ontario, John Gibson moved back to the USA, first to Illinois then to Iowa. Never give up and good luck to us both, Cheron -----Original Message----- From: gibson-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:gibson-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Pamela Gibson Sent: Wednesday, May 06, 2009 7:25 AM To: gibson@rootsweb.com Subject: [GIBSON] GIBSON Digest, Vol 4, Issue 74 > From my digest I can't determine who posted the information about this John Gibson family - Johanna King perhaps?
