Author: tgibson41 Surnames: Gibson, Lewis Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.gibson/5616.1.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, I am a great-great grandson of Elisha S. Gibson and Ann Maria Lewis. I have also been working on the line and to this writing have found no resources pointing to Elisha's parentage. Our family records (family Bibles belonging to Elisha's daughter-in-law, namely George David Gibson's wife, Jennie Smith Gibson and my grandmother, Phebe James Gibson) place Elisha's birth on 2/23/1832, marriage to Ann Maria (sometimes spelled Mariah)Lewis 7/2/1952, and his death on 11/3/1909. His place of death is often listed as Nora, Nuckolls County, Nebraska, but the cemetery (Spring Creek)where he is buried is actually just south of Ruskin, Nebraska, not Nora. See source: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ne/county/nuckolls/NuckollsCemeteryG.htm for a listing of marker information. Ann Maria Lewis is listed as born 5/2/1834 died 1/21/1915 and is buried in the same Spring Creek Cemetery in Nebraska. Ann's parentage and ancestors according to the public ancestory records here on Ancestry.com are extensive, going back supposedly to England's King Henry I and beyond. Lines of her ancestory reportedly branch all over Great Britain and Europe. Ann's parents are George Lewis and Eleanor Ewing Lewis. I am still working on my tree, and have yet to place it for public access, but you can get most of what I have by working here on Ancestry and also the genealogy site managed by the latter day saints, familysearch.org I have google searched all over the Internet and there are several Elisha Gibsons out there, the best documented are (in my opinion) not my ancestor. Our Elisha's records show up in Illinois at the time of his marriage to Ann Maria, and he shows up in a couple of US census pages in Illinois and later in Nebraska. I have checked just about everything free on the Internet I know how to check about Elisha in Ohio, but the state did not require registration of births back in the 1830's. Elisha was apparently a farmer by profession most of his life, and in his later years must have let others farm his land, as later census records list him as a "landlord." It seems most of their children moved out of the area except for Robert Grant Gibson. As to Elisha's early life, I have tried finding military records with no great success and frankly don't know if he ever was in the military. The only records I find of Gibsons in Ohio is that there were several Gibson families known to h! ave lived in Ohio during that time - no specifics. I, too, would greatly appreciate any clue of Elisha's parents. As luck would have it, just this past Christmas, the Nuckolls County Historical Society had a write-up in a regional newspaper describing the renovation efforts of an old church. In the article were lists from a membership roster and Elisha and Ann were mentioned in it. I keep wondering if Elisha or Ann kept a family Bible like Jennie Smith Gibson did and if another branch of the family has the information we both want. By the way, there is some speculation in my grandmother's notes whether the "S" in Elisha's name was for Scroggins, Scoggins, Scrogins or Scogins. It seems Elisha's son, Harry had one form of that as a middle name. I cannot find any confirmation of Elisha's use of this name yet. Just in case you are curious, my tie to Elisha goes like this: Elisha, a son: George David, a grandson: Albert, a great grandson: Frank, a great great grandson: me Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There are lots more Gibson's in ON than in NB, so probably this gentleman did go there. By 1870 my branch with the name of Gibson was almost all gone from our island in NB since Edward had no sons, only daughters. Have a great 2009! She was 94 years old and living with her son-in-law, A. T. Penter and her daughter 'Irene' aka Nancy Arenda Thompson Penter. I have searched the 1850, 1860, 1870 censuses for Lofton and/or Rebecca Thompson and cannot find them until 1880. Lofton was living Milton in 1900. There are U.S.Land records for him in 1857, 1859 and Dec. 1902 in Santa Rosa County. Anyone have any clues about these people?
