BROWN, a leading contractor and builder of Traverse City, commands a large and growing business. His work being of a substantial and reliable kind, he has plenty to do, even during the dull period, and many well constructed residences and other buildings here stand as evidence of his skill. One of the native-born sons of Grand Traverse County, he has grown up with this region, and his own history has been interwoven with its progress. Henry Brown, father of our subject, is a native of the Emerald Isle, but came to the United States while quite young. He first located in Illinois, which was his home for three decades, during which time he was engaged in farming. He is now living a retired life in Traverse City. In 1851 he married Julia Partlow, who bore him nine children, namely: Samuel M., a Justice of the Peace of this city; Albert II.; Ida, Mrs. W. J. Kent; Clara, Martha, Ray, William, and two who died in childhood. The others are ยป11 residents of the city, an! d are numbered among its best families. The birth of our subject occurred January 81, 18C8, in his township, Grand Traverse County. He was reared on his father's farm, and from 1?>??- hood was trained in ind-ustrious and persevering habits. He continued to live with his parents until two years after he had reached his majority, when he determined to seek some other way of making his living. As he had a natural talent for mechanical construction, he began working as a carpenter, and since that time has been thus employed. At the end of two years he commenced his present occupation of taking contracts, and soon built up a good reputation as a man who carried out his work to the letter, and could be depended upon in every particular. April 8, 1894, a marriage ceremony was performed in this city by which Miss Allie Gibson became the wife of William L. Brown. She was born November 5, 1872, being a daughter of Giles and Mary A. (Pease) Gibson. In his social relations Mr. Brown is identified with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and with the Knights of the Maccabees. Politically he is a supporter of the Republican party, and in local matters is a firm believer in choosing only good men for office, regardless of party Hues." Atlanta, Georgia, October 27 - There is great excitment at Hiawassee, Georgia over the murder of Joseph Gibson, a prominent citizen of that place, who was killed Saturday night. Mr. Gibson left Hiawassee about 8 o'clock Saturday morning and nothing was heard of him until twelve hours later, when his dead body was found about one mile from town, near the home of a man named M. L. Amous, who is suspected of a murder. Amous comes from North Carolina and had been studying for the ministry. Gibson, it seems, saw Amous beating his wife and remonstrated with him at which he became very angry. Amous fled during the night. Gibson's throat was cut from ear to ear. Lynching parties have been formed to hunt for Amous. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I hope having more than one person looking for clues will bring some progress in the search. Just a bit more for you. I have found the 1860 US Census in Illinois lists Maria Gibson as head of household, plus the children George, Frances, and (Ruth) Eleanor and a farm hand, but no listing of Elisha. That's what made me wonder if he was ever in the military - or if he was off for a while on other business. In the 1870 US Census, Elisha is back as head of household on the farm in Illinois. By 1880 US Census, it seems the family moved to Nuckolls County, Nebraska. I have PDF copies of most of these census pages, but they won't upload here unless I change them to some kind of picture format. My photos of the Gibson line stop at Albert and I have one of Albert and George Arthur. I also have a large oval shaped photo of an unidentified ancestor - that through family resemblance has to be one of my dad's (Frank) ancestors, but I just cannot figure out if it is the Gibson side or the James side. Maybe your picture will help. Attached is a letter from George David to Albert (Burt). BTW I am both tgibson41 and ed57176 here - I was trying to cut down on spam email and managed two different accounts. Just wanted to also verify a story I was told about George David and Harry. I was told that after Jennie Mae Smith Gibson died, George and Harry went back to Illinois and met Katherine Carrier (Adams) and her daughter. Reportedly Father and Son married Mother and Daughter. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: rainmankg Surnames: Gibson, Goodspeed, Gibbs, Stone, Ingalls Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.gibson/5622/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My great grandfather is James Rodney Merritt Goodspeed. He is listed in the 1891 & 1901 Canada census' as James Goodspeed, with his wife Nora. In the 1860 U.S. census, Rufus Goodspeed, age 37, and his wife Harriet, age 24, are listed living in Montgomery, Franklin, Vermont. Also listed is their daughter Fanny, age1, and Rodney M. Gibson, age 5. Rodney M. would have been born in 1855. Harriet and Rodney M. were both born in Canada E, now Quebec. I am sure that Rodney M. GIBSON is James Rodney Merritt GOODSPEED. The "History of the Goodspeed Family", by W.A. Goodspeed, says that Rufus Goodspeed and Harriet Stone were married 15 Aug 1858, making Rodney 3 years old when his mother married Rufus. Rufus and Harriet had twin girls, Edith and Edna, born in 1862 . Rufus and Harriet both died in 1865. The "Goodspeed Family" book mentions their daughters, and who they eventually married, but no mention is made of Rodney M., who would have been 10 years old when his mother died. The entry of Harriet's death in the Montgomery Town record says that her parents are Salva and Almira Stone. In the 1851 Canada census, a Harriet Stone, age 15, is living with Almira Gibbs, age 52, in St. Armand, Missisquoi, Quebec. Also in the home are two boys, David and Daniel Ingalls, ages 5 and 16. All were born in Canada. Interestingly, the 1860 U.S. census lists a Monroe Ingalls, age 27, as a farm laborer living with Rufus and Harriet. Maybe Salva died and Almira married a Gibbs? Maybe the Ingalls in Almira's home are her grand children or nephews? Maybe the Ingalls are Harriet's nephews or cousins? Maybe that's why Monroe was working for Harriet's husband? The 1850 U.S. census lists Reuben and Mary Ingalls living in Enosburg, Franklin, Vermont. Reuben was born in Canada. Their oldest son is Monroe, age 16. Enosburg is about half way between Montgomery and St. Armand. Maybe Almira and Ruben are siblings? Maybe her maiden name is Ingalls? The names of Gibson, Gibbs, Stone, and Ingalls are very common in Missisquoi County, Quebec, in the last half of the 1800's. How much relationship is there? Lots of questions!!! My biggest questions, however, are what happened to Rodney M. when his mother died and is who is Rodney M. Gibson's father???? If you have any information that can help me tie any of these loose ends together, or if it appears that I have information that might tie up some of your loose ends, please contact me. Thank you.
