Author: Dianne_DeYoung Surnames: Gibson Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.gibson/5704/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Looking for info on a Gibson family from Vigo Co., IN. John Gibson (1812-1876)married 3 times, lastly to a gal named Delilah. She was several years younger than John (b 1827 KY) and she was still living in Nevins Twp. Vigo Co., IN during the 1900 census. They had several children together before his death 1876 and I am trying to piece together all of their children and seperate them from grandchildren that may have been living with Delilah after the death of John. Is there anyone out there that can shed some light on this family for me? Or knows anything about Delilah? I cannot find a marriage record or death record in my searches. Author: ed57176 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.gibson/5616.1.1.2.1.2.2.1.3.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Found an online copy of the History of Tazewell County, published in the 1870's at http://www.archive.org/details/historyoftazewel00chas This book provides interesting insights into the early days of the area from Indians to horse thieves to Abraham Lincoln but unfortunately does not list the parents of Elisha Gibson nor Ann Maria Lewis. It does, however, help eliminate two Gibson families from further consideration in our search. George D. Gibson, mentioned as a purchaser of land in the previous message comes from Pennsylvania and his wife's date of birth (1820) and their date of marriage (1836) is wrong to be the parents of Elisha. Elisha is also not among the list of his living children. A Cyrus. J. Gibson is also mentioned in the work, but can be eliminated by his date of emmigration (1830) to Illinois and by Pennsylvania being his state of birth. A David Gibson (wife Mary) is mentioned as having been involved in the formation of the local Presbyterian church in 1834. Assuming this is the same David Gibson found in the land records, this person is still a possible connection, but no further details regarding his family were included. Author: ed57176 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.gibson/5616.1.1.2.1.2.2.1.3.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Okay, I read enough about the land records to figure out which townships were which in the land descriptions. So, if Elisha's parents moved to Washington Township, Tazewell, then the names of Gibsons who purchased land there about that time from the federal government were: Coleman J Gibson bought land 11/1/1839 David Gibson bought land 11/1/1839 George D Gibson bought land 5/20/1841 George L Gibson bought land 3/20/1837 Margaret C Gibson bought land 11/1/1839 If Elisha's parents bought land from another source, then these records are just another false lead. I found an 1845 marriage record for Coleman J. Gibson in Illinois, so unless that was a second marriage, Coleman would not be the father of Elisha. There was a Samuel C. Gibson who bought several pieces of land in Tazewell County and other Illinois counties in the 1850's but that seems too late in the family history to match. Wouldn't be perfect if the George D. Gibson listed above was Elisha's father? There's just no way to prove a connection, so far. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: srwood0130 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.gibson/5616.1.1.2.1.2.2.1.3.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thank you for the update in your research regarding Elisha Gibson. I tried to order a death certificate for him from Nuckolls County, Nebraska, hoping that a) he had a death certificate made and b) If he had one, someone would have written his parents' name on the record. However, that turned up no results. I am going to be in Illinois at the end of the month doing some ancestry research where I was planning on making a trip down to Tazewell County. I have found that the county libraries in Illinois have very helpful information regarding their county's geneaological records. So, with that said, I will probably spend an afternoon at the library in Tazewell to see if they have anything further on the Gibson family. I will make sure to look at land records as well and will let you know if I can come up with anything further. Continue to keep me posted on your progress regarding Elisha Gibson and thanks for all your information! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
