I'm sure we are referring to the same Robert. I will email you with more information. I know where in Montana Phileat was .. at least part of the time. Maybe you can use the info to find Robert's birth certificate. That would give you Ruth's last name. Ruth also had to sign Phileat's death cert., but I bet she used the surname Gibson/Gipson on it. It would be worth checking out. Eleanor is the name of the second child that we have down as belonging to Phileat, but with a question mark. Was she a step-child? Adopted? Our older Gibson's didn't seem to know how she fit in the family. I'll email soon!! Mary

I know this does not match yours, but my Mother was a Gibson. Her sister's (also a Gibson girl) daughter was named Lula Belle Cayce married a jerk named Diedrich..... her nickname all her life was Babe. It was Babe Diedrich, till she remarried. And she had a son named Robert (??). Small world for names, as this family was in Texas. -- Margie Books.... a nice change from reading prescription labels. -------------- Original message from "[email protected]" <[email protected]>: -------------- > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: Gibson/Davis > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.gibson/5267.2.1/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > Oh my goodness, I think this could be a match. Sounds like we just might have a match. My g-uncle Phileat did a lot of traveling. Phileat was the son of Verlin and Ellen Prater Gibson. Phileat died in Philadelphia, PA. in March 1918, but was shipped home for burial. I do have copies of the telegrams Ruth sent to Verlin and Ellen letting them know of his death. In the telegram, she does talk about the son Robert, but doesn't say anything about another child. The older Gibson's in the family seemed to think there was another child. From what I understand, Phileat met Ruth away from here and the family never said where she was from ... if they knew. Ruth never contacted the family after she went back to Philadelphia. Let me know if any of this matches up. I do have some more infomation and pictures of Phileat, one taken in Montana. Thanks! Oh.. my Phileat's full name was Dolphus Phileatus Blunt Gipson (Gibson).
I am most interested in Robert Gibson. I am related to him. Would you please contact me. Hi Listers Further to my previous email looking for my 1/2 brother's ancestors I managed to find out his granfather's name which was Harold and his wife was Elizabeth (nee' Reynolds). Unfortunately I have not been able to go any futher due to lack of BMD documents/certificates. The FreeBMD has no record of Harold's marriage (tried both Scot/Eng)! I am now not so sure if Harold was born in Paisley except possibly his parents/grandparents were. Help I need further guidance please! Thank you. Regards ChristopheR
Must be that grouchy Gibson disposition - especially when their rest is disturbed, LOL. I know my branch of Gibsons are VERY touchy about their sleep schedules, and this runs to even female cousins on that side of the family. I think the "sleep grouch" gene must have skipped me. I just cry if I don't get enough sleep (if it goes on for a week or two). Anita B. At 12:19 PM 1/4/2007, you wrote: >Is it a Gibson thing or what - with the jail thing? This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Gibson, Philate, Davis, Verlin Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.gibson/5267.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Maybe something I write may help.... Philate is part of the word philately, which is the study or collection of postage stamps. Maybe it's the male first or middle name Philetus (nicknames Leet or Phil)? In the Social Security Death Index (http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi) there are three matches for first name Ruth and birthdate 5 Dec. 1885, but none were issued or died in CA. She may have died before the late 1960s. You can use the same kind of criteria on the 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 censuses at Ancestry.com by filling in first name Ruth, born California, born 1885 /- 1 year, and a town or county of residence. This way, you don't have to know her surname to find her, though you may have to wade through a bunch of records to find the right address. In the notes field you could add Robert (for son) or Charles (for brother) in the appropriate time frame. Another trick would be to use the city directories since you know the address. Often city directories have reverse addresses so you can look up by street name, which may give you Ruth's surname. Contact the local library for city directories. Also, the library may have newspaper clippings and obituaries on file, so ask. Ancestry.com and http://news.google.com/archivesearch and HeritageQuest/ProQuest newspapers and obituaries (available through libraries) also have historical and more recent newspapers available. Michele also suggested contacting the prison, which is a good idea too. You may need to dig out your birth certificate to prove you are Robert's daughter. Also, you could look for court records for his trial. It may give you info on his birthdate, his family, his residence, his marital status, his employment, etc. And follow through with newspapers for the robberies, capture, court case, and deadly prison fight. Hmmm, I wonder if prisons also have burial grounds or records.... There are a few web sites on the prison: http://www.cya.ca.gov/Visitors/fac_prison_FSP.html http://www.stevenmenke.com/FolsomPrisonMuseum.htm Hope you find the answers you're looking for! ---Robin Mason www.wordsworth2.com

Also would be interested in seeing someone from the John Gibson (1601?-1694) of Cambridge, MA, line do DNA testing, since these three Gibson families sometimes overlap in locations. I have looked in Rootsweb and found nothing. Have you found anything in FamilySearch.org or census-online.com? If you look in the links listed under the censuses, you may find information you never knew. I used this and found my great-grandfather had been married four times, widowed once and divorced twice, and I was only told he was married twice, maybe three times at the most. In Rootsweb, I found his grandson - a relative I didn't know I had. If you cannot afford to join Ancestry.com or other pay-membership genealogy record site, some libraries subscribe to it and you may be able to link to the information either from the library or at home (I haven't figured out how that works but will). I am sure these pay sites *may* have prison rosters. Do you know what facility your father was in? I have been fortunate to know my parents and basically where I come from (especially my Gibsons and Logans). But I have had some trouble finding out about my mother's side of the family. I have been interested in that side of the family, because of my mixed (so far white and NA) heritage and all that it includes. That mystery is slowly unraveling, and the researchers in that side of the family are working on it. It also helps if you have fellow genealogists in your family.
