    1. Re: [GIBSON] Isom and Isham name sources - Bible
    2. One has to take in account variations of spelling, however good intentioned the name givers were. Here are some possibilities: Ishma: one of the sons of Etam, a leader from the tribe of Judah and brother to Jazreel (1Chron.4:3) Ishmael: first born of Isaac and Hagar (Gen. 16) 2. a Benjamite and third of 6 sons of Azel, descendant of Saul (1Chron. 8:38) 3. leader of a tribe of Judah afn father of Zebadiah (2Chron. 19:11) Ishmaiah: one of he warriors who deserted Sual to join David at Kiklag. (1Chron. 12:3) 2. the administrator over Zebulun and a leader of his tribe during the reign of King David (2Chron. 12:3) Ismakiah: One of the Levites who were supervisors of the tithes. (2Chron. 31:13). Source: The Complete Who's Who in the Bible by Paul D. Gardne, editor Hope this helps. I am a former Christian Ed. Director. Brigitte

    3. I checked my Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible, has every word in the Bible in it, neither name is in there anywhere. Mary Lyn -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Harald S. Gibson Sent: Monday, January 22, 2007 6:03 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [GIBSON] Isom and Isham The recent listings about Gibsons in Arkansas mention the given names Isom and Isham. My grandfather was Isom Marion Gibson, and HIS grandfather was Isham Gibson. Both were educated and preachers, so I don't think misspelling was involved. Isham was born in KY in 1803, moved to Illinois. Isom was born in Illinois. (Neither of them involved Arkansas.) I had always thought those names were biblical. But I just checked around and googled and found neither one in any Biblical listings. One source said Isham, and its spelling Isom, both come from Anglo-Saxon usage in Northamponshire. I do notice that both have been used as surnames. So, the names seemed to have some importance among the Gibsons, although in my lines I can't find any others before them. Does anyone have any knowledge of these names? I found their marriage licence in Jackson County Ar. Hi The information I have, shared by other researchers, is James F. Gibson born Sept 23, 1849 died December 7, 1898 -- son of William Gibson and Mary Buster from Strawberry Twp, Lawrence Co., Arkansas. William was born in Missouri. The 1829 tax list shows a Samuel and William paying taxes in Lawrence County. I don't know of a connection to my Gibson family but in a desperate search for parents or siblings of my William Gibson married 1835 in Scott Co., Va., I have tried to follow all the Gibsons in Scott County. I'm not sure how or if Samuel and William might tie in to the Scott County Gibsons but I know of two other families from Scott County that removed to Strawberry Twp, Lawrence Co., Arkansas and were neighbors of these families. One was the Henry- Nevil Wayland family from Scott County -- think the mother was Kezziah Gibson as the Wayland land in Scott County mentioned land set aside for James Gibson. There is a will for Thomas Gibson in Henry Co., Va., that mentions his daughter Kezziah Gibson and I suspect she is same as Scott County, but no proof. Another family I suspect was from Scott County that went to Strawberry Twp., was the Absolom Goins family. Some of these families left Virginia early and went on to Indiana, Missouri etc. I'm not sure but the oldest I found was Samuel Gibson born abt 1770, wife Precious, died abt 1835 in Strawberry Twp. Benjamin, Hugh, and William Gibson are born 1807-1811 in Missouri and found in Lawrence County 1850 and James Gibson born 1805 in Virginia. I'll try to get my file on these families together and email it but perhaps someone on the list can correct or add to the above. Joanne

    2. The problem I have is that my father, Tillman Clifton Gibson was left an orphan at a very early age, both his parents and all his siblings except for a married sister died between 1895 and 1896. He was the baby born in 1894. His parents were James F. Gibson and Amanda J. Cole Gibson. I found their marriage licence in Jackson County Ar. As far as I can ascertain He had no more paternal relatives except for a half brother who was married with children. James is my brick wall. If you happen across a James F. Gibson in your research, please let me know. Thank you, Lynna Gibson Morris

    3. Lynna: Here's about three generations of my wife's Gibsons. If this happens to be your family let me know and I can send you more, in fact if our research overlaps I'd be glad to send a CD with all the Gibson line that I have. Descendants of Isom Gibson Generation No. 1 1. Isom2 Gibson (John1) was born Apr 1818 in VA. (Source: Census (Federal), Marble City Twp., Netwon Co., AR. - 1900.), and died Abt. 1903. He married (1) Cary Ann Frederick Jan 18, 1849 in Barry Co., MO. (Source: Barry Co., MO. Recorder of Deeds - Marriage license.), daughter of James Frederick and Susan Durden. She was born May 23, 1829 in NC, and died Bef. 1855. He married (2) Sarah (Unknown) Abt. 1855. She was born Abt. 1836 in NC. (Source: Census (Federal), 1870- Dallas Co., MO.). He married (3) Mary Ann Goldston Abt. 1875. She was born Abt. 1830 in Lebanon, Wilson Co., TN. (Source: (1) Census (Federal), Newton Co., AR. - 1880., (2) Research done by Glen Maxey - Austin, TX., Glen Maxey of Austin, TX.). Notes for Isom Gibson: Recently discovered that Isom had some military service from a book " Arkansas Volunteers of 1836 - 1837" by James Logan Morgan and reprinted by Arkansas Research in 1992 lists Isom Gibson. Isom is listed as a Pvt.; Co. B; 1Bn; 2nd Reg.; Arkansas Mounted Gunmen. The term of service for Isom and his unit were the same, Enlisted September 15, 1836 and discharged March 30, 1937 at Camp Washington near Fort Gibson, Oklahoma Territory. It does not appear that the unit saw any real action. The action which the units were organized for was variously called the Cherokee Wars, Cherokee Removal or Defense of the Sabine River In 1852 congress passed an act that awarded bounty lands but the unit was was never authorized to draw pensions. I have copies (from NARA) of correspondence that Isom had with Washington D.C. in what appears to be an attempt to acquire additional land that he may be entitled to as a result of his military service. It also appears from the correspondence with the pension office that he had excercised his original land warrant for 80 acres in Barry Co., MO.and then transferred title to John Gibson (who I believe is his father). I have not been able to find Isom or his family in any 1850 or 1860 census. Found the following information online it comes from a Dallas Co., MO. marriage book " Book A, 1863 -1873. It shows that Isom Gibson, who is listed as an Elder of his church (church unknown) performed the following marriages. 04-25-1869 G.F. Weeks - Lucinda Brown 06-22-1870 John H. Bennett - Catherine Keren 06-25-1870 George Bennett - Catherine Rsouin (or maybe Roussin) 12-11-1870 Charles Wilson - Nancy Green 12-17-1870 Hesekiah Brown - Nancy Ellen Emeline Asken Federal census (Dallas Co., MO.) shows that in 1870 Isom Gibson was married to lady from NC. named Sarah. Federal census (Newton Co., AR.) shows that in 1880 he was married to a Mary. Information found in the "History of Boone County" identifies Mary as Mary Ann (Goldstein) Gaylor she appears to have been Isom's second wife, Mary Ann had two sons and a daughter by her marriage to a Ruben Gaylor, which The 1880 census shows E.C. Gaylor, her son, living with them. The census also shows Isom's son by Sarah, William E., and a girl, Ellen, which the census says is his daughter also living with them. THE ABOVE IS FROM FEDERAL CENSUS AND A BIOGRAPHY CONCERNING THE GAYLOR FAMILY IN " HISTORY OF BOONE COUNTY " PUBLISHED FOR THE BOONE CO. HISTORICAL & RR SOCIETY, INC. THE BOOK WAS PUBLISHED IN 1998 BY TURNER PUBLISHING CO. Family legend says that Isom Gibson lived in Wilcoxson, Newton Co., Ark. The town later became known as Marble City, then was changed to Marble Falls and later Dog Patch, USA and since the failure of the entertainment center (Dog Patch) the town has been renamed Marble City. He was a millwright, carpenter and preacher, also operated grist mill and cotton gin at Wilcoxon. His old home place is about two miles south of the falls on Mill Creek and there is a large hill that is called Gibson Hill at the Old home place below Dog Patch. The marriage index for Newton Co., AR. calls him an ordained minister and he was performing weddings in the 1880s. The credentials found in Newton County, AR. probate records indicate that Isom belonged to the United Baptist Church of Christ. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ This is a copy of credentials for an Allen Hudson found in Newton Co., Ar. Notes for Isaiah/Isah Gibson: I have found Isaiah's name spelled several ways. The 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910 federal census spells it Isaiah. The 1920 census spells his name Isah. His name is spelled Isah on the marriage license between him and Mary Cruise. The 1920 federal census has Isaiah and family living in Coal Co., OK. He and Mary have grand daughters, Stella and Dorthia and grandson, Lewis living with them, I would guess that these children are the offspring of he and Mary's son, Lewis. Vernon Elmore, Ardmore, OK. whose wife, Elaine, is great granddaughter of Robert Henry Cruse, brother of Mary F.E. says that the Isaah & Mary F.E. were in Comanche Co., OK in 1906 to take part in a land auction around Lawton, OK. The land had been Kiowa Indian land and was the last parcel of the Oklahoma land rush. More About Isaiah/Isah Gibson: Age at time of death: 72 yrs., 10mos., 14 days. 3. Jerry: I saw where Gail Lies answered your reply to my query. I'm also adding some info. I've started with Isom Gibson who is my wife's ggrandfather on her paternal side. There is probably a lot more information here than you wanted at least it makes interesting reading. Isom Gibson is my main brick wall and has been for quite some time. I know a lot about him but have not been able to find exactly when he died or where he is buried. I know he was alive when the 1900 federal census was taken and he was living in Jasper, Newton Co., AR. "The History of Boone Co., AR." published by the Boone Co. Historical & Railroad Society published in 1998 gave her name as Goldstein, I have chosen to use the spelling of Goldston on the theory that the Goldstein name was from third generation memories and the Goldston name is from genealogical research. (Source: (1) "The History of Hood River County, 1852 - 1982" , Hood River Historical Society, Hood River, OR.., (2) Oregon Death Index found at Ancestry.com.). 1. [GIBSON] GIBSON, ERIC GUNNER - Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient WW II
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Gibson Classification: military Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.gibson/5278/mb.ashx Message Board Post: GIBSON, ERIC G. Rank and organization. Technician Fifth Grade, U.S. Army, 3d Infantry Division. Place and date: Near Isola Bella, Italy, 28 January 1944. Entered service at: Chicago, Ill. Birth: Nysund, Sweden. G.O. No.: 74, 11 September 1944. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at risk of life above and beyond the call of duty. On 28 January 1944, near Isola Bella, Italy, Tech. 5th Grade Gibson, company cook, led a squad of replacements through their initial baptism of fire, destroyed four enemy positions, killed 5 and captured 2 German soldiers, and secured the left flank of his company during an attack on a strongpoint. Placing himself 50 yards in front of his new men, Gibson advanced down the wide stream ditch known as the Fossa Femminamorta, keeping pace with the advance of his company. An enemy soldier allowed Tech. 5th Grade Gibson to come within 20 yards of his concealed position and then opened fire on him with a machine pistol. Despite the stream of automatic fire ! which barely missed him, Gibson charged the position, firing his submachine gun every few steps. Reaching the position, Gibson fired pointblank at his opponent, killing him. An artillery concentration fell in and around the ditch; the concussion from one shell knocked him flat. As he got to his feet Gibson was fired on by two soldiers armed with a machine pistol and a rifle from a position only 75 yards distant. Gibson immediately raced toward the foe. Halfway to the position a machinegun opened fire on him. Bullets came within inches of his body, yet Gibson never paused in his forward movement. He killed one and captured the other soldier. Shortly after, when he was fired upon by a heavy machinegun 200 yards down the ditch, Gibson crawled back to his squad and ordered it to lay down a base of fire while he flanked the emplacement. Despite all warning, Gibson crawled 125 yards through an artillery concentration and the cross fire of 2 machineguns which showered dirt over hi! s body, threw 2 hand grenades into the emplacement and charged it with his submachine gun, killing 2 of the enemy and capturing a third. Before leading his men around a bend in the stream ditch, Gibson went forward alone to reconnoiter. Hearing an exchange of machine pistol and submachine gun fire, Gibson's squad went forward to find that its leader had run 35 yards toward an outpost, killed the machine pistol man, and had himself been killed while firing at the Germans. 3. I am looking for a George Hebel Gibson born in Arkansas. His mother's maiden name was Blue. His brother was known as "Blue" Gibson and also H.C. Blue or Lewis Gibson. Lots of names, I know. In 1930 he is found on the US Census and is married to my grandmother, Gertrude Estelle Rich, Gibson. They lived in Lake Charles, Louisiana. They lived in Nacogdoches, Texas in 1936. I heard that he passed away around late 1970s early 80s and the funeral was in Monroe, La. Any help is much!! Appreciated. I will include an attachment of his photo. Gene and I are following the same basic line of Gibsons who came from Scott County, VA in at least the 1830 era and then through Montgomery County, IL and on through MO to Washington County, AR. They are there in the 1840 census in White River twp. Following is the main family that we are researching. If anyone has a similar path of movement I would love to share information.
