    1. [G-P-L] Civil War question
    2. During the Civil War there were not the rules & regulations as modern military. Many times, a town or area, a German group, an Irish group ( or others) would enlist together and the person or persons who organized them would become the officers . (with no previous experience) I am helping a friend research a German group from the area of Albany New York. This friend was in the German Air Force during WWII and his one ancestor an officer in the Union Army. Bill Fehlinger - NJ

    2. Thanks Bill. Of all the responses, this one seems to make the most sense. I too had thought he might have served in the militia just prior to the outbreak of the civil war, but at age 22 in 1862, it is very unlikely that he had faught in any war previously. Strangely enough, his family also migrated to Michigan from Albany, New York. His name was William V. Stewart; he served in the 5th Michigan Cavalry/Company E.. He was taken prisoner in 1863 and died in Andersonville Prison, GA in 1864.
