Hello Ersula, Re: Gottfried Hafner He appeared on the federal census for New Jersey (1850) for Essex County (West Ward)..On Census of Aug, 20th (Line 31) Cabinet maker. Spelling was as above. He came here we are assuming around 1840 or before. We have his marriage record from St. Johns German Evang. Lutheran Church In Newark, N.J. He married Maria E. Ries Dec. 14th 1841. That is the earliest record. On his application for naturalization 10/11/1844 and on his final papers when he became a citizen Nov.1st 1847..his name was spelt: (Haefner).. but on none of these records were... when he left Germany..who with..what ship..when arrived.
Sorry, unable to locate Gottfried on a passenger ship or 1850 census. Line number on census is meaningless since every page has a line 31. Perhaps you can send the number of visitation in front of his name or the page number. He may be listed in 1850 but neither Genealogy.com nor Ancestry.com has him indexed under that name. I found a Louis and Anna Hafner in Essex in 1850 but that's it. Gottfried must have died between 1850 and 1860 as in 1860 all that's listed is his wife Maria E Hafner and their 4 children. gwcolby@juno.com wrote: > Hello Ersula, > Re: Gottfried Hafner > > He appeared on the federal census for New Jersey (1850) for Essex County > (West Ward)..On Census of Aug, 20th (Line 31) Cabinet maker.
