    2. Ellen, Thank you so much for your reply,I do not have much more information. My g grandfather, Jean(John)M.Courrege was a butcher in N. O., I was told he worked in the French Quarter Market area. Elizabeth and John's first son (my grandfather, Bertrand) was born in Iberia, the second son was born in St. James Parish, at least that is some information I have, not sure it is correct. Not really much more info than what I originally sent to the List Members. I would be most grateful if you can find any info in Lafayette this winter. Thanks again, Gayle in N. J. -----Original Message----- From: germany-passenger-lists-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:germany-passenger-lists-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of bruce.mckown@att.net Sent: Tuesday, September 12, 2006 1:43 PM To: germany-passenger-lists@rootsweb.com; Germany-passenger-lists@rootsweb.com Cc: jschengrund@earthlink.net Subject: Re: [G-P-L] Elizabeth Schumer Courrege Send me what info you have on those is Lafayette and I will try to look them up for you this winter. 3. Hello Gayle, Just a word of caution: whenever the data of a birth is given with "about 1800" or whatever, you can be sure that the information was not taken from a church record, regardless whether you've found it at the LDS or somewhere else. Even in the 1700s, German records give the exact day/month/year of birth, marriage or death. Now then, regarding your ancestor in LA, I did a little snooping around and came up with the following: According to the 1860 census of Jefferson, Jefferson Co., LA, "blank" Correje, age 27, wife of John Correje, 34, b. France, butcher, she was born in Baden! If you contact me personally, I' send you a snapshot of the census page and you'll see why her first name was omitted from the census index. Also appearing on the 1860 census is the large family of 'M Shumer', all of whom are born in Baden, except 'Sahal', the youngest child, age 12, who was born in LA. If this family was related to Elisabeth then this would mean that the family arrived prior to 1850. What I don't understand is why the Schumers you've found arriving in 1853 would have booked a passage to NY when they were intending on settling in New Orleans. Makes no sense to me. Maybe they took another boat from New York to New Orleans. According to the 1870 census, John Courrage, 46, is now married to 'Bauline', age 36, b. in LA. They have no other children other than Bertram (17) and Simon (13). I've found Bertram in 1880 married to 'Adele' (age 16) but what happened to Simon? Did he move away?
