The letter (e) and letter (f) was dropped when he came here. as the 1850 Census Listed him as Hafner) and in later census as Haefner. He had a son born in 1848 Gottfried also...My Grandfather! he was on the 1850 census also for N.J. Looked at a lot of Ship 's lists over the years...no luck can you help me on the Germany side. 2. Dear G. Colby: I'm sure people were not ignoring your request it is just that not any where near all ships lists have been translated. I have several such relatives. Many of the German records have been destroyed. You just have to keep trying and hope some day you find them. If you know where they came from try getting records from the church in that community or maybe they published a book about those who left the area. One never knows where you will find a piece of information that will lead you on. You may never find the ship they came on! -----Original Message----- From: germany-passenger-lists-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:germany-passenger-lists-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of gwcolby@juno.com Sent: Sunday, October 22, 2006 2:40 PM To: germany-passenger-lists@rootsweb.com Subject: [G-P-L] Fw: Fw: Gottfried Hafner 1850 Census Essex County N.J. 3. Hello, Following your initial query, I tried locating your Gottfried Hafner on a passenger ship list and also on the 1850 census in Essex County NJ, both without success. You wrote that Gottfried was married in Essex County in 1841 and that both he and his son, Gottfried Jr, appear on the 1850 census in Essex County. Do you have the name of the Ward or Township in which they lived? According to the index at Ancestry.com, there were only 2 persons by that spelling listed in Essex County, namely Anna HAFNER b.~1826 and Louis HAFNER b.~1822; both lived in the West Ward of Newark. On the 1860 census I found a Maria E HAFNER (48) b. Hessen, and children Caroline (16), Christiane (15), Louise (13), and John G. (11), but no Gottfried HAFNER senior or junior. How did you obtain your information?
