Hi Wolfe, I have started to continue the work my mother (Ruth Weis Flournoy) did almost 20 years ago when she started looking into the family tree. She died in 1993, too early to benefit from all the information available on the web. I have been trying to find when my German ancestors came over but haven't found them on any of the free web sources. I have Jacob Weis Sr coming over between his birth in Baden in 1816 and 1846 when he married Francesca Eckert (born 05 Oct 1818 in Baden or Bayern) in Ohio (their son's, Jacob Weis Jr, death certificate listed her as Frances Von Eckert). I couldn't find Frances either. Nor could I find the Geisler's (Catherine Geisler, born 1849 in Indiana and her parents, George & Eleanor, who came over from Baden between 1834 & 1838) I think I have exhausted the free web sites so want to know which fee-paying sites or publications would be most informative. I also have a friend near Munich who could do some German language research if I knew the most productive sites (in fact we are going to visit her this weekend). Thank you, Janet Flourrnoy
Hello Janet, It seems to me that you have a lot more research to do here in the US before you jump across the big pond. Remember, all records in Germany are kept at the local level and unless you know the name of the town that your ancestors came from you can forget about finding them over there. Your email does not provide clear information as to exactly who it is you are looking for. Your jumping from Indiana to Ohio without given any counties/townships or dates of birth for these people, making it extremely difficult for anyone wanting to help you. First it is important to find these people in a specific state/county/township and after you have established the family unity (with approx. dates of birth of children etc) you can then go on to try and find them on a passenger list. You're listing their name as 'WEIS' which in Germany was most likely written as WEISS; and what's up with the GEISLERs? How are they connected? If you can provide some detailed information you may not have to go with any fee-for-service site as there are enough volunteers (like me) out there willing to help. Ursula
Hi Janet, thanks for having so much confidence in me.. ;-)) But it would be much better to ask questions like this the whole list.. Then you would have many more 'brains' to pick on..
