    3. Hello Kajh, I think it's an excellent idea to provide access to the actual passenger manifest, however, when I tried uploading the - Constitution 1 - all that came up was the header of the manifest. The browser said it was 'done'. Could these manifests not be transfered to pdf-files? It might reduce the file size and allow faster loading. Something you may want to consider. I'm not convinced that it's a good idea to break down the passenger list for the sake of alphabetization. Here is why: there are times when family units who immigrated under different surnames [e.g. a married daughter]and/or other families from the same village all traveled together. When you separate the surnames into alpha-categories, this family or hometown association gets lost. Since the site has a search engine, this alphabetization is actually unneccessary. To illustrate my point: I was searching for Margarethe WAHL who emigrated from my hometown of Angersbach in the 1850s. When I found the passenger ship that she came on, I found 6 members of the GLITSCH family, 1 Georg Eichenauer, 1 Marg. Renker, all from the same village, whom I did'nt even know had emigrated as well! Had I been content in finding Margarethe WAHL by clicking on "W", I would have never found the other immigrants. This is also the reason why I think that having access to the actual manifest is so important. I wish I had time to help you all but I'm still employed full-time and have 2 websites to maintain. I noticed that the "German Page" is not yet active, can I help you in that department? Do you have specific plans on how you want to handle the translation of the icons etc. Ursula from Michigan kajh wrote: > Good Morning List, > > There are four new Ship Manifests ready and loaded > into the Passenger List Database. > > Please visit! > > Ships and Passenger Database: > http://www.saxonyroots.com/ships/ > > Newly added: > > 1) > AGDA, Bark > Departure Date and Port: 18-May-1872; Bremerhaven, > Germany > Arrival Date and Port: 29-Jul-1872 Quebec, Canada > > 2) > CHARLES, Ship > Departure Port: Le Havre, France > Arrival Date and Port: 29-Jul-1840 New Orleans, USA > > 3) > LEONIDAS, Brig > Departure Port: Le Havre, France > Arrival Date and Port: 09-Nov-1852 New York, USA > > 4) > OLBERS, Ship > Departure Port: Bremen, Germany > Arrival Date and Port: 28-May-1851 New Orleans, USA > > A BIG "thank you" to all of the Group Volunteers who > have made this possible to provide free passenger > lists on the Internet. > > Germany-Passenger-Lists Thanks You! > > __________________________________________________ > Do You Yahoo!? > Tired of spam? 3. Hi Ursula, We're very appreciative of good ideas and suggestions. I know there has been some database function problems which Wolf Z., the Admin., has been working on. This is in reference to the Ships and Passenger List web pages. 1) Early this morning I tested the vessel , named Constitution after your email. Test: I could bring up Code 3 ID 16 Constitution, Bark ~ on the German-language page but not the English-language side. I was able to bring up (no code showing) ID 6357 Constitution, Ship ~ on the English side. Therefore, yes, I too experienced some difficulties as well. 2) As for the passenger lists being available in the .pdf Format, I've seen that done on other web pages. Wolf would have to make the determination if that is viable for him to do. You are correct that in many cases it is important to see the ship manifest as a whole in order to see the groups traveling together - whether they may have been related or not. That could be true for the US Census data too, just in reviewing neighborhoods of city or farm/homestead dwellers. We will contact you off-list for further discussion of your ideas Ursula. Please know we are most appreciative! Kathleen ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ --- "Ursula B. 3. Hello Ursula, I want to thank you for your comments and suggestions and would like to 'encourage' everyone else to follow in your 'footsteps'. This is the ONLY way to improve things and make them easier to access for all of us. Most of your comments and suggestions are of a technical nature and I don't think all of our subscribers are really interested in this, therefore I will answer you privately.. Thanks again and have a nice evening, Wolf [Zscheile] ******************************************** Visit our homepage with ALL the latest NEWS http://www.saxonyroots.com ******************************************** > -----Original Message----- > From: germany-passenger-lists-bounces@rootsweb.com > [mailto:germany-passenger-lists-bounces@rootsweb.com] On > Behalf Of Ursula B. 3. My husband's Great-Grandfather sailed on this same ship, also from Liverpool to Philadelphia in 1907. He was from "White Russia", which today is Belarus, but on the manifest is just Russia. His wife and children followed two months later on the S. S. Friesland. I'm really curious on how they made their way from Russia all the way to Liverpool, and why, instead of sailing from Bremen or Hamburg. Thanks for all the information on this ship. Elaine O'.
