    3. GGrandfather, Karl Endlein, wife, Catherina Ehl ( or ----) arrived at Castle Garden on May 8,1871 on the ship Abysinnia out of Liverpool, England. They had two young children, Maria and Casper with them. Passenger list and all U.S. Censuses list them as Nassau, Germany being their birthplaces. Have no idea how they got to Liverpool nor where in Nassau they came from. Can anyone give suggestions or any help in establishing their origin? Thanks. Cas

    3. Hello Cas, There were 2 types of immigration, 1) direct immigration and 2) indirect immigration. It's actually were easy to understand. For example: 1) The immigrant embarked on a ship at Bremen and disembarked in New York 2) The immigrant boarded a ship in Bremen to England and from there, usually Liverpool or Southampton, boarded an oceangoing vessel to America. Thus, upon arrival in the US, only the voyage from Liverpool to New York would be listed on the manifest. Now regarding their hometown, this may be a little more complicated but one of the best sites I have found with maps, and explanations about Hesse-Nassau can be found under http://members.cox.net/hessen/hesse.htm Not that it will solve all your problems but I hope it'll help.
