Hello, I find it most annoying to receive mail from list members who then refuse to accept replies unless one registers with them all in the name of 'controlling spam'. Anyone wanting to control spam - if that's what they consider mail from the GPL - should not mail queries. Apparently some people don't know that the easiest way to control spam is to only accept email from people/lists in your address book. It's as simple as that! Ursula from Michigan
Ursula, If we only accept mail from people in our address books, anyone we haven't communicated with directly will be blocked anyway. And that won't work unless you put everyone you send email to in your address book, which I don't. I save my address book for people I expect to communicate with on a regular basis. Otherwise it would be huge. That said, those of us with spam-blocking software should try to remember to add the address of anyone we email to our verified list right away. That will ensure that the receiver's reply is not blocked. I personally often forget to do this, but I do go into my spam software at least once a day to accept any messages that I want that haven't been verified. So if someone sends me email who doesn't want to verify, they don't have to. I'll verify for them. My apologies to anyone I offend, but spam-blockers are a very effective tool. It's been a long time since I got email about Viagra or about a fortune awaiting me in Nigeria. Susan ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ursula B. Ursula, Are you referring to earthlink.net customers? If you are, I would like to tell you that I am one of their customers and am extremely happy with the way that they keep spam, etc away from my door. You can't have new people in your address book until you receive their first message. How else do you know who they are? I believe that all any earthlink.net customer can avoid the necessity of adding each and every person to their address book who are communicating to them via rootsweb.com. The should go to their Spam Blocker on their web mail for their web address in question. Select "Suspect Email" For a message received from rootsweb.com, select "Move to inbox and add contact". Next they will get a choice of what to add to their inbox. Instead of adding the person, there will be a choice to add a company domain. Most likely, there will be more that one domain that can be selected. Select "rootsweb.com" Do not select the others. If you select the person's domain (e.g. aol.com) then you will receive messages from anyone at their domain (e.g. aol.com). You are finished now on your webpage. The message will go to your mail folder but into the trash box. What I do here is to select all messages in their Trash Box, after I look at the names and sources, and add to my Inbox. If I don't take this step I can not select a webpage mentioned in an email to look at. This feature does not work from the Trash Box. >From now on, any message from rootsweb.com should go directly to your Trash Box and no one should be rejected and receive those rejection notices.
