    3. Sue, I was also fascinated by Don's tips for the surname charts. I took the opportunity to look up a new surname that has currently appeared in our family tree via a found letter (Passavant) and found out that there were very few records for it (as for your Fingado). I went immediately to www.telefonbuch.de and looked up the name. I found a handful of people with the name living in the area of my ancestors (and a couple outside the area) as well as a bunch of companies with the name in their titles. Looking up Fingado there returned 26 results, of which most seem to be private individuals. Rosenheim seems to be a popular town in the list. Although it is clear that this is a bit of a long shot I do intend to write/call the people involved to see if they are interested in family history and have any information about their forefathers. YMMV of course, but for those of us with slightly less usual names in our trees this could be a reasonable proposition. Has anybody had experience of trying this method? My German is fluent, and I also live over here so no worries about waking someone in the middle of the night if I decide to call, but any tips regarding approach? I know this can be a touchy subject for some people, particularly the older generation. Sorry if this is a bit off topic.
