Dear Listers: I have found three sets of relatives that emigrated Hesse-Darmstadt via LeHavre, France. They arrived New Orleans, LA. in 1851, 1856, 1857. They all married Cincinnati, OH, in Reformed or Evangl. Luth Churches, each, about a year or so after they arrived. They emigrated as couples, but the ship's manifest lists the women by their maiden names. Is it possible three of my female relatives were not married, and traveled across the ocean with someone not their husband? I'm aware a marriage 'levy' was applied in Hessen and proof had to be made that a man could support a wife, but was it practice to have the maiden name on the manifest so a female could be located easier via document? Makes some sense, not much. Regards Elyse
