Andrea, that's why it is important to at least know the year of birth =/- one; also he most likely did not travel under the name of John Shafer but rather Johann or Johannes Schäfer/Schaefer. It would help if you knew what German state he came from, i.e. Hesse, Wuerttemberg, Bavaria etc. to narrow it down. You can safely assume that if the wife came via Bremen, the husband came that way as well.
