This ship left Bremen / Bremerhaven on 2/28/1883 arriving Hawaii Apr. 28, 1883. The 800 + passengers were primarily contract workers who were to be divided between two plantations on Kauai. The passenger manifest available in Hawaii simply lists passengers by initial of first name and last name; ie; H. BISSEN with no reference to birth town / last residence etc needed to find data on his family in Germany. Can someone put me in touch with a volunteer researcher in Bremen area who can tell me if the records in the Bermerhaven Genealogy Museum would include a copy of this ship manifest and the data I need to continue my research. Henry William BISSEN was born 18 Sept. 1865, place unknown, has extensive descendants but no ancestors at this time. Any help, advice or recommendations will be very much appreciated. Hi Chuck, Have you contacted the Emigration House at the Museum? Here is their contact information: Historisches Museum Bremerhaven Deutsche Auswanderer-Datenbank An der Geeste D-27570 Bremerhaven Phone +49 471 30816-0 Fax +49 471 5902700 info@deutsche-auswanderer-datenbank.de info@historisches-museum-bremerhaven.de Another idea would be to contact the University which is closest to their facility and see if a student would be available to go there in person for you - after the holidays. The National Archives here also has immigration records. Have you contacted them? Here is their information: The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) Available 1800-1959 Immigration Records: Years covered for Hawaii: Honolulu, Hawaii, 1852-1952 http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/immigration/passenger-arrival.html NARA Contact Information: http://www.archives.gov/contact/ I noted The State Archives of Hawaii were supposed to have their manifests on-line by the end of this year of 2006. Have you asked them how far along they are with their project? Also, do they hold any other type of information such as the contractor information of the company who brought the workers over to the islands? I hope you are able to find out some more information. Best of luck! Kathleen ____________________ --- Chuck wrote: " ... This ship left Bremen / Bremerhaven on 2/28/1883 arriving Hawaii Apr. 28, 1883 ... ... H. Kathleen, I am interested in your reply to Chuck as regards an approach to take to obtain passenger manifest information from the Historisches Museum Bremerhaven / Deutsche Auswanderer-Datenbank. In my case, the passenger records in question would be for the May 1872 time period from Bremen to Baltimore, USA. Can you take this one step further & supply the name, location, e-mail and/or postal address for a University that would be within a reasonable distance of the above referenced Museum. I would like to try this approach, using a student as a researcher/resource, but I am at a loss as to just how to proceed with the logistics of such a search effort.
