Does someone have a web site link to send me that will show me outbound ships that arrived in Antwerp, Havre, Bremen, and Hamburg? Looking for relatives that may have visited Germany again after they emigrated. List for both Castle Garden (I know what the web address is) as well as Ellis Island (know that one too) Many thanks, Dave
I have never heard of U.S. outbound passenger lists available, so I checked the National Archives website, just to be sure. [ http://www.archives.gov/forms/pdf/natf-81.pdf] THis is what it says there: "WHAT WE HAVE: The National Archives has inbound Federal ship passenger arrival records dating back to 1820 for most east coast and gulf coast ports and a few lists dating back to 1800 for Philadelphia. Ship passenger lists in our custody are not complete. Fire, dampness, or other causes destroyed many records in the 19th century before the creating agencies transferred them to the National Archives. During the 19th century, no law required passenger arrival records to be kept for persons entering the United States by land from Canada or Mexico. No law required the keeping of outbound passenger lists. You should be able to find these people in INCOMING passenger lists upon their return from Germany. Good luck! Dave, have you tried the "Passport Applications" on ancestry.com? It often gives the date and name of the ship on which immigrants, returned to Germany. After 1920, it also shows a passport photo but it's always on the next page. Of course this only holds true if your immigrants ancestors had been naturalized, otherwise they'd travel on their old German passport.
