    3. Dear Listservers; My name is Ann Johnson, nee Schroath. Presently I live in North Carolina, USA, near the capitol of the state, Raleigh. I have had a long interest in finding my German roots through my great grandfather, Gottfried SCHROATH. From the census information and a citizenship abstract in which he is listed, I surmise that he was born around 1818 in Darmstadt, Hesse. The citizenship abstract tells me that he was 33 years old at the time of his emigration. He left Germany through the Port of Bremen on 7 June, 1851. (I know this through a copy of the Declaration of Intention.) He arrived at the Port of New York July 14, 1851. (Citizenship Abstract.) Each document states that he is from Hesse Darmstadt. There are no other passengers from Hesse Darmstadt leaving through Bremen on this abstract (but there is a man from Hesse Cassel, John Eberhard Schuck.). There are several alternate spellings to this name. I have found in various locations of census, the spellings of Schroth, Schrodt, Schroath, Shrode, and Shroth. Gottfried spelled the surname Schroath in the United States. He is listed in the Declaration of Naturalization Index in Meigs County, Ohio, November, 1856, as a native of Darmstadt, along with John Betz, and Henry Becker, also natives of Darmstadt. Many German immigrants came to this county in Ohio during this period of time. Gottfried married Susannah Ebersbach, a native of Oppau, Germany. They raised a family of nine children,of which my Grandfather was one. I have searched many places for ship information--paassenger lists, name of ship, etc. but to no avail. I do not have any other information about Gottfried Schroath. I do not know his church, place of origin, other family members, or how to find this information. Therefore I turn to the listserve. Any and all suggestions would be welcomed by me. I am fairly new to German research, so I know I need much assistance to find this information. I look forward to talking with the list and the knowledgable persons who use it to help me. To summarize: name: Gottfried Schroth, age 33 years, a native of Darmstadt date of departure: 7 June 1851, from Bremen arrival in US: 14 July 1851, Port of New York Declaration of Intention: 27 May, 1854, Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio Naturalization: 1 November, 1856, Meigs County, Ohio To find the place of origin, church and/or other family members.
