    3. Hi Kerry, One to keep in mind that usually is not thought of, is New York. The Erie Canal was completed in 1825. People were able to travel up the Hudson River to Albany, then go by way ot the canal to Buffalo. Once there they could go by way of the Great Lakes to Chicago and then go down the Mississippi. Traveling by water was cheaper and faster than traveling by land.
