Possible yes, but highly unlikely considering the distance from New York to Galveston going over land, the number of weeks on the road, and the cost, and all this on the heels of a 3-4 week ocean voyage? Why it would have taken them longer to reach Texas than it took them to reach New York, Baltimore or Philadelphia. If they had indeed first landed in any of the Eastern seaports, there would have been a ship going to New Orleans for less cost and time than going by land. The Erie Canal was completed in 1825. People were able to travel up the Hudson River to Albany, then go by way ot the canal to Buffalo. Once there they could go by way of the Great Lakes to Chicago and then go down the Mississippi. Traveling by water was cheaper and faster than traveling by land.
