Doug, this may be a case where the distinction made in Hamburg Passenger Lists between "direct" and "indirect" immigration comes into play. The explanation given is that Hamburg to Baltimore or New York, or Australia or Brazil would be considered a "direct" emigration. Whereas the "indirect" immigration would be from Hamburg to other ports in Europe [e.g. Marseilles] and from there subsequent transport to other ports such as New Zeeland, Australia, etc. You will need the year/month of immigration to do a search. Hamburg records start in 1853 [I believe], to be sure, check the description of the records under 'Immigration' then 'Hamburg Passenger Ship Lists and Indices' on Ancestry.com. On the crew and passenger list it doesn't name them but lists them as single male and female INTERMEDIATE German immigrants. The people in question are Christopher Martin or Martin Christopher Ruprecht born 1837 Waldbach Wurttemberg and Friedericke Rosina Rapholt/Raphold/Rapold/Rapbold (there seem to be many variations of the name, she would have been pregnant and it is suggested by one source she gave birth to a daughter soon after arrival in Sydney. So if they embarked at the Cape of Good Hope, how did they get there? If by another ship from a German port how do I find this out, or could the Armin been en route to the Cape of Good Hope and had picked up the hun! dreds of German immigrants at a German port by arrangement? I cannot quite see the disembarkation of hundreds of poor immigrants with their goods and chattels walking from one ship to another in SW Africa!
