Hi Bev, In the late 1700's parts of Germany suffered from the Seven Years War. At times there were crop failures and diseases. Catherine the Great came to power in 1762. She offered German settlers that would come to Russia land, a reprieve from taxes for a number of years and I believe also freedom from conscription into the army for a number of years. I'm sorry I am fuzzy on the exact details. I'm sure if you checked on Catherine the Great and Russia you would be able to find them.
