Greetings to the Germany Passenger Lists Group / Liebe Leser und Leserinnen der Germany-Passenger-Lists-Gruppe, This is my first subscription to a mailing list on rootsweb, so I was glad to be informed of the protocol (below). My name is Michael Douglas Ewing and I live in California. For a beginning genealogist (I have been researching only since the start of this year) this seems like a great resource to track my German ancestors as they made the great voyage to America. About myself: I am a son of an American father of very mixed heritage and a German mother, whose parents both were born in the former Yugoslavia and came to America at the end of WWII. Though I have spent the majority of my life in California, I am fluent in German, having studied and worked in Germany on separate occasions - this has turned out to be quite a boon when researching my German heritage. My major areas of interest concerning German passenger lists (in order of importance) are: Fathers side: - *Staley, Daniel* - b date and place unknown, d date and place unknown m Louise Moore probably in Port Perry, Ontario Canada - from anecdotal evidence, Daniel came from a family of shipbuilders leading me to believe that he may originate from a coastal region of Germany. When he came to America, he apparently left brothers and sisters behind in Germany - Daniel and Louise had several children: Bessie (my gg grandmother), Eunice, Ursula, Mary, Mary who married a brother of Bessie's husband, Lydia, Harvey, Alice and Daniel. Interesting to see that Daniel and Louise followed the tradition of naming their last-born son after the father. - I question the "German-ness" of Daniel's name - as it does not appear typically German to me. Perhaps it was changed upon arrival to Ontario, Canada. Mother's side: - *Schreiner, Hermann Josef *(my gg grandfather) - b 1848 in Winnerath, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany, d. 1906 in Windthorst / Nova Topola, Bosnia - Though I have found no record, HJ came to the United States and fought in the civil war. Disliking America, he returned to the Rhineland and soon after emigrated to Bosnia. - Looking for info on his passage to America, involvement in the war and parentage in Rheinland-Pfalz - Additional related families from Rheinland, Nordrhein-Westfallen, Niedersachsen (Oldenburg) whose members may have migrated to America: *Boeckmann, Wortmann, Bloms*, Looking forward to researching with all of you.
