    3. Hullo Ursula Thanks for your reply Here is the brief story of Henry; He was born in Adelaide South Australia on 14 April 1851 - Father Franz ANDERS from Prussia; mother Anna Catherina from Bremerhaven, Hannover (?) On 24 July 1866 aged nearly 16 years he and his maternal grandmother Mary (nee THEDE) GRAVES/GREVE/GREFE/GRAEFE (born approx 1795 in Bremen - aged abt 70 years and a widow) departed Adelaide on a frigate "Gosforth" bound for London, United Kingdom. Arrived in London on 24th July 1866 - landed in the middle of a cholera plague - over 4,000 died in London at this time After looking through more information I have found that Henry (aka Heinrich Wilhelm, nationality ENGLISH) and his grandmother (probably still noted as German) arrived in New York on a sailing ship on 21st September 1866. (Not the 1st!) There had been deaths on board from cholera - so yes, I guess the ship would have been held in quarantine before clearance to land was given. Also guess they would have landed at Castle Garden? Is that right? As far as I know there were no other family on board. His grandmother was seeking her two sons who lived in New York - names and ages of these boys is not known On 1st October 1868 Henry was naturalized and noted as being ENGLISH - I have his documents - the information on Ancestry does not show his date of arrival nor the ship - he lived at 18 Pell Street, New York (Chinatown?) Sorry this is so long winded but its quite a story. Henry married Sophie SURGANTY in Grace Church, Elmira, Chemung County on 10th October 1870, had two boys and returned to South Australia in 1877 My main aim is to find he and his grandmother arriving in New York and the names of the sons? Big ask, but hopefully all will be revealed in time Regards Chris in Hahndorf South Australia _____ From: germany-passenger-lists-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:germany-passenger-lists-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Ursula Sent: Tuesday, 17 May 2011 10:30 PM To: germany-passenger-lists@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [G-P-L] Ships arriving in September 1866 Hello Chris, Ancestry lists the arrival of only 3 ships on 7 Sep 1866 in NY: Electric Ottawa Sir Robert Peel Do you have the DOB for Heinrich and his grandma Marie? Was Grandma's name Anders as well? Were there other family members on the ship? What was their nationality? How reliable is the Arrival Date? Sometimes people got confused between the date of arrival - i.e. ship having dropped anchor in NY harbor and waiting for the doctor to arrive - and the date on which they actually set foot on American soil at Castle Garden, which sometimes occurred 1 or 2 days later, you know quarantine and so on. I am looking for immigration information for a Constantin Nau who according to Ancestry.com arrived in 1866 to New York and the information is contained within that book. Strange that I could not find it elsewhere?! Constant was b. 1845 in Schroek, Germany. I appreciate any help I can get and thank you in advance.
