All I know is that my wheelwright great grandfather from Hesse arrived in Galveston, ended up in Lavaca Co, Texas, and worked as a wheelwright until he got together enough money to buy land in that county, where he raised a large family. He continued to buy land, though not huge amounts, and farmed. I think he also raised cattle. He eventually built a large house, in which my dad and I were both born: he in 1906 and I in 1931. Unfortunately, the house is no longer there. Oh, by the way, so far as I know he knew no one here, but the child of an older couple who travelled with him eventually became his wife.
