Could anyone help me with the surname Schroth? My g-grandfather’s Declaration of Intent states he was from Hesse-Darmstadt. This document is dated July 14,1851 as the arrival date out of the port of Bremen. I have examined the telephone directories for the distribution of the surname, which is quite large. I have no information about the area in Hesse-Darmstadt that he may have come from. Can anyone give me some pointers about: where to begin asking questions; how to find a lead about his town of origin? I have also searched for ships records, but have not turned up anything.
