Julia, it doesn't matter whether you departed from Cuxhaven, Bremen/Bremerhaven, or Hamburg, the lighthouse known as "Roter Sand", located 30 miles offshore in the North Sea, was the last piece of 'home' the emigrant would see. There are many lighthouses in that area but the oldest and most famous one is the now defunct Roter Sand. Operation was discontinued in the 1960s. I googled "Leuchtturm Roter Sand" but the homepage is in German. You may want to see if they have an English version.
