Hello John, Following the lead in Christian's obit - I assume it was issued by his second wife - that Christian first settled in St Jacob, I checked the 1860 census for St Jacob line by line but did not find anyone by the name of Bollman or Kaemp[ff] or similar spelling. One more thing [a la Colombo], did you not say that you had their marriage certificate? When and where were they married? The obit says they were married in 1855. Is this correct? Do you have the birth certificate of their first born child? What does it say? Is it possible that they met somewhere other than Illinois? I will check out this link for Edwardsville newspapers. This figure Christian BOLLMANN has been a series of irregularities in dates and dead ends throughout my research. I also noticed some irregularity in dates in the Census reports, but I think the most accurate is probably his Request for Citizenship in 1861 (and recorded by the clerk of court in 1866 see transcript) as it discusses his immigration only 5 years removed from the arrival date he states and his immigration age matches the headstone birth date.
Ursula: This is what I have readily available on my spreadsheet...will have to look to see if I have any other info like the actual records. Marriage record says married Christian BOLLMANN married Johanna Kaempf March 03, 1860 in Highland, IL. Christian remarried to Marie/Maria Hermann (b. ~1849 in Switzerland - d.? After 12 Jan 1920 Census at Highland?) on 1893/4 at Highland IL. She had one son Henry Hermann from previous marriage and Christian fathered daughter Freida. 7 - Freida BOLLMANN (b. ~1895 highland ILL - d. ?) - md Harry E. LEU/LEE?? (b. ~1890 - d?) on ~1913 (age 18?) at Highland ILL. (Born of Maria Bollman and Christian) family listed 1900 (Christian/Maria/Freida)/1910 (Maria/Freida)/1920 With LEU family) Census - Helvetia Township, Madison County, vic Highland ILL and approximates birth year. Ellis Island record - The RHYNLAND Manifest; steerage lines 82-82-84, page 226 in Ellis Island database; a Maria Hermann age 39 (married) arrived 10 Aug 1892 from Antwerp aboard ship The Rhynland with daughter Laurence? age 18 (servant) and son Heinrich age 11, all SWISS and living in Basel...Might be Christian Bollmann's second wife?
