Dear Ursula: I don't think you will remember me, but I was the one looking for the birth place of Gustave Hackebeil. Well he has been found, and it was in the place you suggested--Etzoldshain, part of the Ostrowo gemeinde. They were married there and had five children in that place and then moved to the Uichteritz where the sixth child, a daughter was born. A young man who lived close to Salt Lake City, who is a Mormon, looked at the records for me. He is now checking to see if he can find Gustave's emigration to the U.S. Thanks to you and Vera for helping to locate those places. It just goes to show that one should never give up. Perhaps if I had seen the writing of those earlier records in Wisconsin, I might have realized that his birthplace was spelled wrong(very wrong), but someone else did that and alls well that ends well. Thank to you and Vera for all of your help. I was also able to pull up a picture of the castle in Etzoldshain, and got a picture before they withdrew the website. You cannot assume that in everyday life he went by three first names! So the first thing you need to do is to ask your mother by which name he was commonly known. Next you will need to know at least the month in which he was born in order to eliminate any other persons by that name born in the same year. Unless his parents immigrated as well, there is little help from knowing the names of his parents. Also, there was/is no such town in Meyer's Gazetteer of the German Empire called "Katlowitz". I assume he came from Kattowitz in Silesia. The Gazettier is a most important resource for locating places in the German Empire before their names were changed into Polish or Russian. The other thing that has me scratching my head is that you say that he came between 1918 and 1922. He would have been 33 to 37 years of age. This would have been immediately after WWI! Had he indeed tried to avoid being drafted into WWI, he most likely would have emigrated long before 1918. So there is something not quite right with this scenario. Does your mother have any relatives left in Germany from which to ascertain more information? You will need to do more digging for your search to be successful. Best wishes, Ursula. ____________________________________________________ There will come a time, when you'll have no more time. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bettina" <bat@centurytel.net> To: germany-passenger-lists@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, March 4, 2011 10:01:24 AM Subject: [G-P-L] Karl Wilhelm Leopold Jaeger This is wonderful information, thank you. It gives me another reason so look again for my Uncle Karl. When I get a chance I will do it or if someone out there is will you can try and let me know. Here's what I know about him. Karl Wilhelm Leopold Jaeger was born 1885 in Katlowitz. Came to New York about 1918-1922, likely from any of the ports of Bremen, Bremerhaven or Hamburg. Lived in Frankfurt. Parents were Karl Leopold Jaeger and Ottilie Pauline Borchardt. All my mother knew was that he left for the U.S. (NY). She suspected that he did not want to serve in the military and was either ashamed or ostracized. He was in NY at some point as a friend of the family sent his mother a picture - she saw him at the Salvation Army. I contacted the Salvation Army and they could not help. I've looked through the U.S. census info, but Jaeger is a fairly common name. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you again for posting this new database.
