    3. John: Of course I am not Linda but wanted to add some things which may perhaps be worth to think about / consider regarding your challenge to find your "Christian D. Bollmann" in Germany. 1. providing a place of origin as "Thueringen, Saxony, Germany" is totally wrong (I feel really sorry to say so.) since both "Thueringen" as well as "Saxony" are/were independent states in Germany. So he might either be from "Thueringen" OR from "Saxony". 2. you said that always the "infamous "Prussia" as his origin on Census and other documents" appeared. That is indeed a huge area to search for him, but on the other hand it indicates at least that "Weiher-Baden Germany" can't be true since "Baden" was never part of "Prussia". 3. although the family name "Bollmann" is widely spread all over Germany there is at least "some trend" pointing to the northern parts of Germany - say "Prussia". 4. can you provide the exact years of the Censuses and/or the dates of those documents on which you find "Prussia"? If so, take the oldest one on which you find him mention this and then check the boundaries of Prussia at that time. This should at least help to narrow the area to search quite a bit. 5. What was the occupation of your relative? 6. What was the religious belief of your relative (Catholic OR Evangelical/Protestant/Lutheran)? 7. Did you already search all the Baltimore passenger lists (one-by-one and page-by-page) available on Ancestry for ships arriving in July 1856? I recently found the arrival of one of my ancestors that way since this given name was reduced to just one initial and his family name was indexed totally incorrect. Kind regards, Vera Nagel, Germany From: "Galle, John L (AMSEC)" < John.Galle@ngc.com> Subject: [G-P-L] BOLLMAN(N) Researcher Date: Tue, 8 Mar 2011 16:26:19 +0000 References: <BLU0-SMTP2129B66ACA8F60EB7C5ACB89CC50@phx.gbl> In-Reply-To: <BLU0-SMTP2129B66ACA8F60EB7C5ACB89CC50@phx.gbl> Linda: I am also working on a BOLLMAN(N) line, but have been stuck on it for 10 years now, unable to jump to Germany. My relative was: 1 - Christian D. BOLLMANN Sr. - b. March 20, 1834 in Thueringen, Saxony, Germany [or Weiher-Baden Germany or Bonn, or Prussia], and died December 12, 1908 in Highland, IL. (He is buried at the Highland Cemetery at row M1 number 17) - md Johanna KAEMPH [Kämpf] [LDS has name as Hannah Keamph] (b. September 11, 1832 in Zurich Switzerland - d. October 13, 1892 in Highland, IL) on March 03, 1860 in Highland, IL. He came over in July 1856 through Baltimore according to his request for citizenship, but lists the infamous "Prussia" as his origin on Census and other documents. The family lore has him born in numerous places. They settled in Highland Illinois living there until 1900s. My grandfather was in MN for a time as well, but settled in Appleton Wisc after living in Delta Ohio and marriage in Ohio. Have not found a passenger list. I have several partial lines of BOLLAMN(N)s but did not see a link to your data yet. Do you have any other information on your line in Germany that I might work back on looking for my Christian BOLLMANN? If so would like to compare notes. John Galle

    3. Vera: Thanks for the reply. To address your comments concerning my "Christian D. Bollmann": 1-2. I am aware of the divergence in the birth locations, but that is what I have from the existing family lore... I couldn't rule anything out, although I guess I can now rule out Weiher-baden as it is not in "Prussia". Maybe Bonn too? The definition of "Prussia" seemed to change some based on what source I was looking at. 3. I have seen some concentrations of BOLLMANs particularly Mecklenburg and Silesia...but does not fit Thueringen or Sachsen... There is rumor of Austrian interface, but nothing substantiated. I do not know of any siblings either, although there were two other BOLLMANNs that got their citizenship around the same time in the Highland area; could not establish a link... 4. He shows up in 1880 Census, 1900 Census, 1860 marriage license, and Ursula helped me find him under a different name (BATHMAN) in 1870 [Many thanks to Ursula!!]; all in Highland Illinois. I do not know why he is not in the 1860 Census... I have his Request for Citizenship (which is the earliest document listing Prussia, dated 1861) that I got from the Southern Illinois University (SIU) Library around 2008. I have not been able to find a source of German Census early enough to help find him in 1830s/40s/50s. 5. He listed Teamster and farmer as his occupation in what I have seen. In Highland Illinois, farmer was pretty consistent. 6. Religion, have no clue. Married by Justice of the Peace on 3 March 1860 in Highland Illinois. 7. I learned of the "July 1856-Baltimore Port of entry" data from his request for citizenship that I got from SIU around 2008. As a result, I downloaded all the Baltimore BOLLMAN(N) Arrival data 2 years ago and pulse the system once in a while as I know they are transcribing records every day. No joy so far. I appreciate the interest! Any assistance from anyone on the list would be appreciated as I have been stumped here since 1999.
