    3. Judy, Our local library used to offer every CD from the Family Tree Maker collection to its patrons but a couple of years ago they donated the entire collection of 150+ CDs to the local historical society with the statement that no one was using them since most people have internet access at home. So now [we] the historical society has all these CDs, which not only contain passenger ships lists but census records of every state and a myriad of other records. I never used any of them at the library and so I don't know whether these CDs were actually of an Ancestry package or part of the FTM. 3. Oh yes, I remember now that at the Rootstech Conference someone said that Ancestry will again be free to access at the LDS family history centers. Best check with your local center to see if that's in fact the case. >Ancestry is available at all LDS FAmily History Centers and is free -- Ancestry is expensive if there is an alternative way to acces it.< NOTICE: This email message is for the sole use of the intended recipient(s) and may contain confidential and privileged information. 3. John, you're welcome. In the data I provided below I just forgot to mention that this ship "Arago" started its journey in Bremen, Germany. Other than that I found in the German-Passenger-Lists archives that you already have all of this since 2007. So I apologize for wasting your time, sorry. Regarding the map of PRUSSIA: you find it here http://echo.ec.funpic.de/webpages/Preussen_1866_.jpg Although this map primarily reflects **which territory was known as Prussia in 1866 (Prussia's border is displayed in red)" you can also see in it which areas were part of Prussia in 1815 (mid-blue color) and which areas became part of Prussia by being annexed between 1815 and 1866 (light blue color). Good luck with your further research, Vera Nagel -----Original Message----- From: germany-passenger-lists-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:germany-passenger-lists-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Galle, John L (AMSEC) Sent: Donnerstag, 10. This Christian Bollmann came over alone - say without other family members on this ship. Plus a short search within LDS IGI index turned up "Bollmann" family from Veckenstedt. In case you want to have the image just let me know - it's my pleasure to send it to you directly. I also found a historic map of Prussia which I can provide to you directly if you like. 3. Hello Walter, There is no website per se but rather you need to subscribe to Ancestry.com. FYI the Hamburg Passenger Lists are DEPARTURE records - the same records, which are the ARRIVAL records of the same ships have been indexed at Ancestry. Therefore, if you haven't found your ancestor among the ARRIVALS in NY or Baltimore, chances are they departed from and arrived at a different port. Having said that, if you know the year in which your ancestors left Hamburg, then there are certain steps you must take to locate the passenger ship list. Before I waist time explaining how to get there, please tell me from what German state your ancestor came from. Often family researchers don't realize that emigrants from the southern German states of Baden-Wuerttemberg and Bavaria or Switzerland seldom traveled to Hamburg to sail to America. For those, the French and Belgium ports were much closer. I found that emigrants from Brandenburg and Mecklenburg generally departed from Hamburg, while those from all the other northern states departed from Bremen. So, to speed things up, tell me the year of emigration and the home state of your ancestors and then we'll take it from there. 3. The images of the Hamburg passenger lists and indexes are available on www.ancestry.com. Ancestry has only indexed part of the set so far, from 1877 to 1914. Ancestry is a subscription site, but you may be able to access it from home through a public library with your library card. Many larger public libraries subscribe to the Ancestry Library Edition. Do remember, however, that prior to the 1880s only about 30% of German left through the port of Hamburg. Bremen had a much larger share of the immigrant market at that time. Happy weekend! I always find it interesting that one note sparks a flurry of activity and then quiet again for a time. I would definitely be interested in the PDF versions of the Edwardsville OBITs and will contact you on your other email below. When I visited Highland/Edwardsville about 5 years ago to do some research, I ran across three BOLLMANN families in the Edwardsville area in late 1800s, but had only 2 days on site. I think they are likely related, but could never make a link with the limited data I got. What is your source for the OBITs? I am looking for the OBIT of a second wife Maria (HERMANN) BOLLMANN who married my Christian ~1895 and had a daughter Freida who married a LEU. Maria is found in the Census living on her own with a daughter and her other son in 1910, and living with the LEU family in Highland as mother-in-law in 1920/30 Census over 70/80 years old, so likely passed away in 1930s or early 40s. Do not know where she is buried either...rumor is with the LEU family. She was born in Breslau, Silesia, Germany on Nov. 14, 1844 and came to America with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Zimbal in 1849. She married Christian Bollmann on Dec. 20, 1865. He passed away in 1906. I assume you have the obituary for Christian Bollmann from Illinois. The Edwardsville Intelligencer Dec. 17, 1908 Page 4 Christian Bollmann, Sr., for many years a resident of Highland, died at the hospital Saturday, aged 74 years. He was born in Germany and in 1852 came to America, settling at St. Jacob and later in Highland. In 1855 he was married to Miss Hannah Kaempff, who died in 1891. The union was blessed with nine children, of whom six are living. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Edwardsville Intelligencer Dec. 12, 1891 Mrs. Elizabeth Bollmann, age 80 years, 9 months and 10 days died at the home of her son, Herman. Born March 18 or 13, 1811 in Lineo, Province Westphalen, Prussia and came to this country in Nov. 1865 settling near this city. When about 20 years of age she married Wm Bollmann. Here is the link: http://edwardsville.newspaperarchive.com/ I remember our Bollmann research from years gone by, in fact I still have some of our correspondence on one of my old PCs. Every time I come across the name BOLLMANN I think of you. On the 1900 census, Christian stated that he came in 1853! The 1857 reference on the naturalization application may have been the date when he first filed the Declaration of Intent. I also noticed a different Birth Year in the obit compared to what he stated on the 1900 census. With this many variables it is difficult to pin down the actual date of immigration, although there are not that many Christians/Christ./Christopher Bollmann/Ballmann/Bellmann with one 'n' or two that come even close to an immigration date prior to 1860. Nonetheless, I'll keep looking. Best wishes, Ursula. -----Original Message----- From: germany-passenger-lists-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:germany-passenger-lists-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Galle, John L (AMSEC) Sent: Thursday, March 10, 2011 9:55 AM To: germany-passenger-lists@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [G-P-L] EXT :Re: GERMANY-PASSENGER-LISTS Digest, Vol 6, Issue 28 Sandie: Thank you for the reply! ------------------------------ Message: 3 Date: Thu, 10 Mar 2011 10:43:23 -0500 From: "Ursula B Adamson" <ubatrans@comcast.net> Subject: Re: [G-P-L] Carl Bollmann from Pommerania To: <germany-passenger-lists@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <000501cbdf39$e6c60c60$b4522520$@comcast.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Hello Linda, I have not forgotten your Carl. In fact since you didn't reply as soon as I had anticipated, I located the family myself on the different censuses in MN. I also located Wallbruch / Deutsch Krone as I tried to figure out what possible route the family might have taken. I assume and hope that they came through Hamburg as this gives us some hope of finding them on a passenger list. I have checked the Hamburg departures for the year 1882 [it's a tedious process] as I found one Carl Bollmann, but without family. I will check 1883 and also 1881 as young Paul may have forgotten the exact year. I'm also curious about the two sons born in NY according to one of the censuses, which indicates that they spent quite a few years in NY. This throws cold water on my original assumption that they might have entered the country via Canada, especially since their destination was Minnesota. Of course it is possible that their plan to settle in Minnesota may have been forged while still living in NY. So while I don't have anything positive at this time, I'll keep checking the passenger lists I have mentioned. Best wishes, Ursula. -----Original Message----- From: germany-passenger-lists-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:germany-passenger-lists-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Linda Westrom Sent: Tuesday, March 08, 2011 11:34 PM To: germany-passenger-lists@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [G-P-L] New to this list... 3. Ursula, I always assumed they came through New York because some of my notes from conversations with my Grandpa Paul were that his mother (Emilie) had a cousin in Brooklyn who made clothes. He told me he was 7 when they came to NY, but yes, memories can be "faulty." So that was where I started. I'm not positive why they moved to Balaton, MN, to start farming, but I have land records, and other documentation for Minnesota. I don't know of any other Bollman family who lived in Illinois, but who knows? Never hurts to ask the question. Thank you for all your help and I know how tedious these passenger records can be. Brown clerk of the circuit court within and for the county and state aforesaid, certify that on the 13th day of February A.D. 1861, - Christian Bollmann a native of Prussia and then of the age of twenty two years - declared under oath before the clerk of said court that he emigrated to the United States in the year A.D. 1856, and landed at the City of Baltimore in the state of Maryland - in the month of July in said year 1856, and that at the time of his said declaration he had been a resident of the County of Madison aforesaid for four years, and he further declares it was bona-fide his intention to become a citizen of the United States. In witness where of I have hereunto signed my name and affixed the seal of said court at Edwardville this 1st day of October A.D. 1866. /s/ Wm T? Brown Clerk. --------- But there are still questions in that the declaration can be read several ways...all giving different dates... 1. 1856-22=1834 for birth date, confirms birth year...however...is he 22 in 1861 or 1856?? I think 1856, since headstone says birth March 20, 1834. 2. There is an issue regarding Christian BOLLMANN's age. This document has a problem in that it is dated 1866, but discusses a declaration from 1861. This document could be read to show that he emigrated at age 22 not 12 as family lore states. I have found this further corroborated in census records where his age = 1834 birth. If however, he was 22 in 1866, then he would be 12 in 1856 but his birth year would have to be 1844 not 1834 as stated on the burial stone and other records. I suspect he was 22 when he arrived in Baltimore, 1856. 3. Unfortunately the location of where he is from is "Prussia" a large area, including Thuringen...but also lots of other places. There are lots of BOLLMANNs from Mecklinburg (also Prussia). I was hoping it would better say where in Germany he was from so I could make the leap across the ocean on the Bollmann line...guess not... 4. If arriving Baltimore MD in July 1856 and being in Madison County 4 years as of Feb 1861, he arrived in Madison County ~ 13 Feb 1857 or ~ 6 months after arrival. (have 1860 marriage certificate to Johanna) This gives me a firm date of residence. So far, I have not been able to find him on any manifest for any ship arrival in Baltimore in the Jul 1856 timeframe. Family lore (which has had some inaccuracies) is that he stowed away in the coal bin...with the help of some unknown friends who were traveling to USA at the time. Even if a stow-away, I suspect he would show up on manifest as addition for customs. 5. Still no reason why he would have been missed by the 1860 federal census (you found him in 1870 Census under a different name) and the 1875 Illinois census...and then finally appearing in 1880/1900 federal census with full family in Highland, Illinois. Suspect he was resident in Highland the whole time...Still have not found him in a Baltimore passenger list. The mystery continues... :-) John Galle -----Original Message----- From: germany-passenger-lists-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:germany-passenger-lists-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Ursula B Adamson Sent: Thursday, March 10, 2011 10:20 AM To: germany-passenger-lists@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [G-P-L] EXT :Re: GERMANY-PASSENGER-LISTS Digest, Vol 6, Issue 28 Hello John, The Edwardsville Intelligencer is online and offers hours of reading pleasure.
