I am looking for information on Herman. Herman and Mane didn't come to the USA. In Augusta obituary it stated she came over with her sister-in-law in 1888. That all I have to go on. Hello Jerrald, You wrote that you wanted to find out information on Hermann VOSS, b. 1848 in Bergen, Pommerania. Did Hermann and his wife Mane also immigrate? and if so, WHEN, and where did they settle? Iowa as well? In trying to find the passenger ship list for their daughter, Auguste, and her half-brother Emil STENZEL and wife Alwine, I found out that they did not come on the same ship as you seemed to think. According to the 1900 census of Grant, Hardin Co., Iowa, Emil J. STENZIL [40], wife 'Vina' and daughter Ida, where all born in Germany, while the rest of the children were born in Iowa. The year of immigration for Emil and Vina was listed as 1888. Well, I searched and searched but while I found Emil Stenzel to have arrived on 28 April 1888 on the ship Wieland, there was nobody else accompanying him. Also, I didn't find any Auguste VOSS or Alwina Stenzel that matched the info you hand provided. I was almost ready to give up when I thought of searching under STENSEL, and this is where I found Alwina, Auguste, and 2-year old Ida, that were all listed under Stensel. I have forwarded the PL from Ancestry to your inbox. Now tell me again whether you are looking for the PL of Hermann Voss or are you looking for information about him in Pommerania. If it's the latter, I won't be able to help you as I don't have access to Pommeranian church or civil records. Best wishes, Ursula ____________________________________________________ There will come a time, when you'll have no more time. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jerrald Lloyd" <jlloyd1@frontiernet.net> To: germany-passenger-lists@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, May 22, 2011 3:40:57 PM Subject: [G-P-L] Fw: Voss I trying to find information on Herman Voss. Dear Ursula See below _____ From: germany-passenger-lists-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:germany-passenger-lists-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Ursula Hello Chris, there are some inconsistencies in your query. In your first email you said Henry Anders arrived in NY 7 Sep 1866, now you've changed that date to the 21st of September 1866. Correct - I noted the change - re-read some files I hadn't looked at for some time - 21st September 1866 seems to be correct Also, you wrote that Henry and his grandmother departed Adelaide 24 July 1866 and arrived in London on the same date. My mistake - he departed Adelaide on 1 April 1866 and he arrived in London on 24th July 1866 This is impossible. Yep - even today that is impossible - ha - I don't know how long he was in London - I would estimate a while - what would the travelling time be to New York by sailing ship? 4 weeks or so? I also don't understand the purpose of Henry's travel from Adelaide to London with his 70-year old grandma in tow and after a few months leaving London for New York Henry was taking his grandmother to New York via London UK to find her sons who had migrated from Germany to New York - their sister (Anna Catherina), my Great Great Grandmother migrated to South Australia in 1848 on "President Smidt" from Bremen (South Australia had only been settled 12 years by then) Just a note - there were very few ships that went direct Australia-USA - only whaling ships at that time. [instead of Australia] he was headed for New York - not a return trip to become a naturalized citizen after only 2 years residency [the waiting period was 5 years]. I don't know how he became naturalized after two years - was 5 years law in 1868?- that's what the records state and also his certificate. What these items don't state is the ship and date of his arrival in USA And what happened to grandmother while Henry lived in New York? Oh yes - I would like to know that but first I have to know which ship, what gran's surname was and what were the names of her sons - I can only assume she lived with her sons Can you explain some of the inconsistencies? Basic brain warp I think, sorry!! On 24 July 1866 aged nearly 16 years he and his maternal grandmother Mary (nee THEDE) GRAVES/GREVE/GREFE/GRAEFE (born approx 1795 in Bremen - aged abt 70 years and a widow) departed Adelaide on a frigate "Gosforth" bound for London, United Kingdom. Arrived in London on 24th July 1866 - landed in the middle of a cholera plague - over 4,000 died in London at this time After looking through more information I have found that Henry (aka Heinrich Wilhelm, nationality ENGLISH) and his grandmother (probably still noted as German) arrived in New York on a sailing ship on 21st September 1866. (Not the 1st!) There had been deaths on board from cholera - so yes, I guess the ship would have been held in quarantine before clearance to land was given. Also guess they would have landed at Castle Garden? Is that right? As far as I know there were no other family on board. His grandmother was seeking her two sons who lived in New York - names and ages of these boys is not known On 1st October 1868 Henry was naturalized and noted as being ENGLISH - I have his documents - the information on Ancestry does not show his date of arrival nor the ship - he lived at 18 Pell Street, New York (Chinatown?) Sorry this is so long winded but its quite a story. Henry married Sophie SURGANTY in Grace Church, Elmira, Chemung County on 10th October 1870, had two boys and returned to South Australia in 1877 My main aim is to find he and his grandmother arriving in New York and the names of the sons? Was Grandma's name Anders as well? Were there other family members on the ship? What was their nationality? How reliable is the Arrival Date? Sometimes people got confused between the date of arrival - i.e. ship having dropped anchor in NY harbor and waiting for the doctor to arrive - and the date on which they actually set foot on American soil at Castle Garden, which sometimes occurred 1 or 2 days later, you know quarantine and so on. Thanks for reply - If more of the PL's were available (GDad) did in 09, could you give me a link to search for 1854 - 1855. There was a note he may have started his home travel to emigrate with Christoph Euchner found on the Ship William Tell on 23 October 1854 - but not on the ships PL list. Hello Chris, Ancestry lists the arrival of only 3 ships on 7 Sep 1866 in NY: Electric Ottawa Sir Robert Peel Do you have the DOB for Heinrich and his grandma Marie? Was Grandma's name Anders as well? Suzanne Barnes In the Family History Library microfilm records there are several films for that area of Freudenstadt , Wuerttemberg. As follows; # 573697 # 1884464 # 1884468 # 1884469 You should be able to checkout the films at the nearest LDS church. Costs about $5:50 per film. That You can view at the LDS library , and copy pages at the LDS library . I checked for batch numbers of Freudenstadt , however and I did not find any batch numbers.
