This whole subject matter is often overlooked. This is REAL HISTORY not learned in books. Those who have seen the movie "THE GANGS OF NEW YORK" may recall the massive recruiting of (in the film Irish) immigrants coming off the ships for the Union Army. ============ On Tue, 5 Sep 2006 10:51:27 -0500 "Bette McIntosh" <bmcintosh@new.rr.com> writes: > Hello "Masugu" (et al), > > I found your observations regarding emigration and Prussian > conscription > interesting. I truly think that I've seen enough about the maps give it a rest and go to the website and get them like was put in an email that went thru the list yesterday. This is overkill. Gale Prince Nash > I would like to see the maps too.
I would like to see the maps too. Renea reddare@mchsi.com
Hello "Masugu" (et al), I found your observations regarding emigration and Prussian conscription interesting. To add further to your posting, in my own research of extended family, I found it curious that an emigrant from Pomerania, born in 1836, would enlist at the age of 28 in the American Civil War in 1864, serve honorably and be "mustered out" at Vicksburg, MS in 1865. Having served the American military effort, on the side of the Union I might add, his honorable discharged earned him automatic American citizenship without his having to complete the *three step* Naturalization process, incurred by other immigrants who did not join the American military. In addition, this Prussian (Pomeranian) born immigrant is buried in the military section of a U.S.A. cemetery while his Prussian born wife's remains are located elsewhere in the same cemetery. For what it's worth. I would love to receive the maps. Thanks.
Another contrary view on cleaning up the replies -- I'm always frustrated when I read a message that is obviously a reply to something previously sent, and I have no idea what it refers to. I think it's good to leave some of the previous email IF it applies to the subject of your email. Just a couple of days ago I found myself scrolling back through the attached emails to help someone with a question. I wouldn't have had the info I needed without the previous messages. It has been mentioned that the maps everyone is so very interested on receiving are going to be posted on a website. Would someone please post the link for this site, I was unaware one existed. Thank you, Jan B.
Hi Folks; I did a good bit of research to try to understand why so many of my ancestors fled Schleswig-Holstein in the mid-19th Century. This led me to understand that up until the time of the Prussian takeover, most if not all Germans were citizens of "city states", such as Hessen, Hanover or Holstein. If a German peasant had any patriotic feelings at all they were to one of these city states, vice a German federation (chances are that any such loyalties went no further than the local village). Since the Prussians required registration for conscription at a very early age (15, if I remember correctly), and since the young men felt absolutely no loyalty to Prussia, many fled elsewhere to avoid the draft. Once having arrived in the US however, their point of view in re citizenship often did a 180. Thus the irony that many who fled Prussia to avoid the draft ended up enlisting in US Federal or CSA military units. One interesting sidebar of my research is the discovery that my ancestors didn't even speak the same language as their Prussian "countrymen". They spoke Plattedeutsch vice German. Also known as Low-Saxon, this is a Germanic tongue more closely allied to Danish, Dutch and English than to proper German. Cheers, Masugu

Only keep following "Free Access" links. Hi Myri, I would be very grateful if you will send maps to me George
My great grandfather Aaron (aka Adolph Marcus) ENGERS appartently served in the German army in 1870-71 in Colmar or Stasburg. Any suggestions as to finding any army records still available? How about the list established of Jewish men serving in the German army at that time?? thanks for any suggestions and help. It is really annoying to scroll through so much material about how to unsubscribe, messages about it being virus free, lists of names, sometimes repeated 3 or 4 times. As you can see from my message, I have deleted all but the list of "Today's Topics". On Sep 4, 2006, at 6:54 PM, germany-passenger-lists- request@rootsweb.com wrote: > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Hi, I found a 1996 article about the company Fries & Fries (note the "&" as opposed to "and") in Cincinnati by googling. It contained a bit of company history: "The four-year-old Tastemaker was formed when Mallinckrodt and Hercules merged their flavor-making operations -- Cincinnati-based Fries & Fries Inc...Fries & Fries -- commonly known as F&F -- was founded locally in 1913 and was acquired by Mallinckrodt in 1971." Another site: "In 1997 Givaudan-Roure acquired Tastemaker based in Cincinnati, Ohio..." I remember it being visible (and smellable!) from I-75 in Cincinnati. A current address for Tastemaker is given as 1199 Edison Dr., Cincinnati, OH 45216, (513) 948-8000 If the company can't help a good place to contact might be the Cincinnati Historical Society. They have many older records from local companies and may have some information on the family tie-ins to the company. Also the Cincinnati Public Library has a large local history collection. Wish I still lived there so I could be of more help. The Hamilton County, Ohio Rootsweb list is very friendly. By the way, for Anglophones, the name of the company was pronounced Freeze and not like (French) fries. Thomas, Kentucky and California, Kentucky are both in Campbell County. He should try subscribing to the Campbell County, Kentucky Rootsweb list. Also keep in mind that Campbell County, Kentucky is on the Ohio River just across from Hamilton County, Ohio where Cincinnati, Ohio is located. A huge number of Germans immigrated to Cincinnati and the surrounding areas from the mid-1800s into the 1900s. There is/was a company in Cincinnati called Fries & Fries that had been there for many, many years. They made flavors for food-- vanilla, raspberry, etc. that you could smell as you went by. I grew up in the area but haven't lived there in over 20 years so I don't know for sure if the company still exists. Googling turns up some possibilities. For whatever it's worth. Hope this helps.
