    3. Hello Rarose, I'll be happy to look them up for you but because as you say there are so many of them, I need to know (at least) the year when Herman and Hedwig were born, the state/county/township in which they settled in the US, and if possible the names and ages of any children that may have accompanied them. I would also help to know Hedwig's maiden namen in the event they did not marry until the after they arrived in the US. The more info you provide the better the chances are for a successful search. 1. [G-P-L] Petition on reduction in hours for National Archives
    2. Julie
    3. I'm not sure if this pertains to anyone - but just in case it does - last day to sign is 9/9/6 ----- Original Message ----- From: Mike St. Clair/TT Sent: 04 September, 2006 8:55 am Subject: Petition on reduction in hours for National Archives In late July, the National Archives announced they were planning to cut back the hours of the Washington DC area facilities of the archives. This would eliminate all evening and Saturday hours and greatly harm the ability of the average genealogist to access the records. For full details, see http://www.archives.gov/press/press-releases/2006/nr06-125.html While the Archivist of the United States was at the FGS conference he reported that they had received very little feedback from the country's genealogists asking for reconsideration. He was also presented with a request from the chair of the FGS Records Preservation Committee to consider some alternatives and a petition was started to allow genealogists to express their disagreement with the changes and to endorse alternatives that will allow the evening and Saturday hours to continue. You can see more details about that in Dick Eastman's weekly newsletter at: http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2006/09/quick_please_jo.html The petition can be signed at: http://www.petitiononline.com/FGS2006 I would encourage each of you, as board members of The USGenWeb Project to use your influence to publicize this information throughout the project. Note that the deadline for receiving comments on the proposed changes by the archives is September 9, so there isn't much time. And I suspect that if they succeed in reducing the Washington hours, the regional archives will be soon to follow. I appreciate all that each of you do in support of the project membership and all genealogists with US ancestry. I believe that a little effort in support of this effort by FGS will pay off long term in enhancing our ability to deliver free information to our clients - genealogists everywhere. 1. Re: [G-P-L] [GERMANY-PASSENGER-LISTS] over replying
    2. Julie
    3. Personally I disagree. I would rather have too much information than too little. I had not checked my email in a week and when I saw how much was there and the info on maps, I just deleted the maps and hessen - just like I do when it is about families that are not mine or I cannot help with. That's the cool thing about email. then I opened one of the others and I was interested and saved those and will go through them and see what pertains, what is just interesting and what my family might be interested in learning. I have posted before on other mailing lists and people have replied directly to me, and I have gotten duplicates. There are also other times where I have been interested in a post someone has asked about and I never see anything else about it. Actually, this list has very few discussions compared to other lists. So in summary - yes there was a mass amount of replies. I for one do not mind it - I just look at the title and delete as appropriate. Sorry for being one more post on this subject. julie --------------------------------- Stay in the know. Pulse on the new Yahoo.com. Check it out.

    3. Ursula, There was no jumping of any guns. We simply happened to be working on the look-up at the same time. Instead of creating yet another new thread, it was apt to add onto yours. This isn't a competition - only an aggregate effort in trying to assist a fellow Mail List member. Her family shows as coming in the years approx. 1871 - 1873 to maybe 1875 on the Joliet, IL Census data. Her original inquiry listed August and Wilhelmina as being the parents of Hermann Georg or Georg Hermann Selinger/Sellinger. My thought was perhaps the family in the township other than Joliet may have been related; eg. John Selinger, Sr. may have been a brother to her August Selinger. Tricia was going on the premise the arrival was c. 1872 which the Hamburg listing indicated as well as did the census from Joliet, IL. I will not enter into any competitive baiting words, for that negates the purpose of trying to assist one another. A group Mailing List is to help each other and learn from one another. I don't have all the answers 100% of the time. You don't have all the answers 100% of the time. Our efforts together though is what may make a difference...and that is a positive. Best regards, Kathleen ___________________________________________________________________ --- "Ursula B. Where does August fit in? While 'kajh' jumped the gun in listing the passengers that I found, I must add that not all of the family members shown on the 1870 census came at the same time. John Selinger Junior and the mother of John Selinger Senior must have come at a different time. You wrote that you thought your ancestors came from Southern Germany. Having said that there are several Selinger families in Southern Illinois who came from Baden so it's important that you search backward from your ggrandmother Bertha so as to be sure you are not crossing into another line. The 1870 census states that the family came from Hesse-Darmstadt. Unfortunately, when I checked the Hesse-D archives, the Selingers were not listed among the emigrants. Just now I'm trying to find the ship on which John Selinger Junior and Elisabeth Selinger, mother of John Sr. immigrated. Ursula __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. Hello Tricia, The John Selinger (b ca 1825) family whose passenger ship list I have found first settled in 1870 in Fountain Green, Hancock Co., Illinois. One of their sons, Herman Selinger (butcher), appears on the 1900 census in Joliet Ward 3, Will Co., Illinois married to an "Eva", with children Walter and George. Are these Selingers your relations? I'm a bit confused about the children "Julius" and "Bertha Emilie" who do not appear on the 1870 census. You wrote that Bertha Emilie married in 1886. What was her husbands name? Ursula
