I believe in 1882 my great grandfather immigrated to United States, I am having problems finding out how he got here to United States. He also has family that is in Leipzig. I would also like to know if there is anyone out there that has him in there database. I am trying to find anything available like a birth certificate and his parents and siblings. I am really struggling on growing this tree. Thanks, Hope Engelmann
I would be glad to help transcribe any list if I can. Let me know what and how to do it. Betty, this would have been known as Pomerania at that time. ============= On Sun, 10 Sep 2006 17:42:47 EDT Musicalbev@aol.com writes: > Betty: > > My family also came from Prussia. I am looking for information on MARY ANNA ABEL who immigrated to the US into New York. She was born around 1831 in Germany and I do not know where. I believe she had a brother by the name of Robert? who came to the US and lived in Pennsylvania. She married a FREDERICK KING and they lived in Ohio and Pa. around Coitsville. Frederick met her on his way to America but she is not on the Ship ( INDEPENDACNCE) on which he arrived in New York on June 21, 1852. He finally found her and married her. If anyone has any information, please let me know. You can emai me at www.madaess@aadelphia.net. Thank you very much in advance.
Betty, yes, the gray is Prussia. Take a look to this side too: http://www.ieg-maps.uni-mainz.de/maps01.htm There are more maps (since 1812). Maybe you understand it better then. Johan Proescher was born in 1830 according to the church records. Did you have any luck with his wife Katerina von Reuschling also from Hesse-Darmstadt and supposedly immigrated in 1851? Gretchen Tinkle
Betty: My family also came from Prussia. They only spoke Polish and I have discovered that the city/village they were from (Schwenten) in Prussia, became part of Germany and then part of Poland - now called Swiete. My family came in 1872 from Bremen to the USA. I have been told by family still in Germany that although they were Prussian, when Hitler took over Germany, the Prussians were not well liked, and most Prussians (because they spoke only Polish), declared themselves Polish. Apparently from what I can find out, the Prussians were hated almost as much as the Jewish people, and the Prussians hid or destroyed any records which showed they were Prussian. How much of this is accurate I don't know, but the relative who told me about it, got the information from her grandmother, who was alive at the time and destroyed all the family history as a result of the takeover, so I'm assuming that it is accurate. Prussia was divided between the countries of Germany, Poland and Russia. I have noticed also on records I have found for my great grandparents, that it depends on the time frame (year) as to whether they declared that they were Polish, German or Prussian. I have different records, showing all of the 3 countries at one time or anyother. The Passenger Lists which I found from the Germans To America series shows that they were German. Hope this helps a little. Bev
Jane, I found this to be true too. I had been searching for my Great- Great Grandfather, MAXIMILIAN (MAX) HARTER. I finally found him in one of the censuses as MAY HARTER.The info all matched. The X really could have passed as a Y. By the way, could still use some help in finding a marriage date/place for Max Harter and Theresia(Theresa)Keelley.Keelley is the name listed on her death cert, which I have. It was pronounced KELLEY. But that seems to be an Irish name and she was from Germany. Her fathers name was Fred. Did not list mothers name, but both were from Germany. I beleive Theresia's last name may be KALLE. I have tried many different spellings and this is the only name that may be a match that I have found. Will email an attachment of Theresias death cert if anyone is willing or has the time to help. If anyone can decipher the birthplace and can point me in the right direction to possbly get a birth cert, I would greatly appreciate it!!!!!!!!! Also, the ship she sailed on. Max was born on May29, 1835 in Onsbach, Achern, Baden, Germany. Came to the USA in 1857. He was a bootmaker/shoemaker. He lived in NYC as far as I can tell until 1869 when he came to live in Lena, IL. Where he and Theresia and most of there children lived til they died. Max and Theresia had 6 children. 3 born in NY. Charles OTTO Mar 17, 1859, Charles W 1862, Mary(my Great grandmother) Mar 14, 1864. 3 children born in Lena Il. Theresa S 1869, William A 1872, and Fredrick Aug 18, 1874. I have Max in the 1860 census living in NYC with a Gebhardt. No Theresia or family yet. Believe Otto was born out of wedlock since his birth is listed as 1859(I have his death cert.) I have a copy of Max's petition for naturalization. Iknow the family was in Lena, IL (Stephenson County in 1869, book in the Lena Library has him owning a shoe store at that time, also listed in every census here til his death in 1920. Theresia deied in 1912. In one census Theresia is listed as EUNICE. Any help in obtaing marraige date/place and birth certs of 3 oldest children would be most appreciated!!!!! Thanks!!! Hello Johann, First off, Hoxter is spelled "Höxter" or "Hoexter" and it is quite a large city in North-Rhein-Westphalia. Q: Is the Hubert DOHMANN you are referring to the one who was married to Anna Schroeder (b Feb 1862) in West Point, Lee, Iowa? This is just a wild guess because in 1880 he is living with the Schroeder family in West Point, Lee, Iowa. I checked the 1900 census for Lee, Iowa and Hubert stated that he came to the US in 1876 (wife Anna was born in the US). I then checked the passenger lists for Hubert Dohmann/Domann arriving about 1876 only to come up empty-handed. Now comes the tricky part: I have found a "Barth DOMIN" est. year of birth: 1855, who immigrated at age 18 in May 1873. I first had my doubts that he was the right person, and when I looked at the ships manifest, he is listed under the last 'ditto' marks for Bohemia. No way I said to myself but then I realized that the person shown on the manifest came from "Hoerster". So, I said to myself, what we have here is a 'lazy' scribe who went 'ditto mark' crazy. I believe that he is your 'Hubert' who came with Jos. and Franz Langehenke, from Hoexter. The difference in the 'year of immigration' 1876 given on the 1900 census may in fact have been the year in which he failed his first papers. When the census taker asked about immigration, people often mis-understood and gave the year in which they became a citizen. I did not find anyone by the name of "Hubert Domann/Dohmann" listed on any passenger list except the one noted. Suggestion: have you checked the church records (birth of any of the children, death of Hubert, etc.) of the West Point to see if anything is mentioned about the place he came from? These German-American church records are generally much more informative than their American counter parts. Thanks for that site, Georg. No problem understanding your English. The maps (1848 I looked at) will take longer - it's hard to read. It shows two sections that are not connected that are called Prussia. My relative could have lived almost anywhere! And since the records from Bremen aren't available, I may never find him. Have you been to Americaf? My grandson started high school this year and he is taking German. I told him to learn it really well and we can go there and he can translate. : - ) Betty yes, the gray is Prussia. Take a look to this side too: http://www.ieg-maps.uni-mainz.de/maps01.htm There are more maps (since 1812). Maybe you understand it better then. Sorry, but my english isnt so good. Georg
I am looking right now for Siddessen,we know family ancestors have lived there for many years, ..DOHMANN & DOMANN..I have been in this researching my family off and on for 53 years,my grandfather to the 28th generation was a Judge in the town of Hoxter, both my grd father & grt grdfather were in the Prussian Armies,1870's & 1848 I have the original Army papers, here at my home plus their photo's. I am trying to find the town where ..Hubert Johan Dohmann b.25 Jul 1856-57,so far Siddessen is our best bet. Johann Dohmann/ USA

WHERE IS TIMBUKTU ??
Where is Timbuktu? The Legendary City of Africa The word "Timbuktu" (or Timbuctoo or Tombouctou) is used in several languages to represent a far-away place but Timbuktu is an actual city in the African country of Mali. Located near the edge the Niger River during the rainy season (but about 8 miles from the river during much of the year), Timbuktu was founded by nomads in the twelfth century and it rapidly became a major trading depot for the caravans of the Sahara Desert. --- avast!
