Thank you Malte, that was extremely informative.. Judy
Hello - my name is Julie and I need help :D I am trying to trace back my ancestors and I'm stuck. I know they came from Bavaria (census) but other than that I'm SOL. This is what I have Margaret and ? Horning/Hornung had their first child John in 1840 in Kentucky (have no clue what city) They had their second, Jacob and third, Margaret in Missouri. On the 1850 St. Louis, MO census it lists the children and the mother - no father then Jacob goes to Kentucky (1860 census) and pretty much stays in that area KY/IN. Jacob's death cert, (1889) doesn't have any info. I have no idea where Margaret ended up. I think I might have found John on the 1880 census, and it stated widower, but I don't know when he died or where (I'm thinking he might have stayed in the St. Louis area) There is a John Henry Horning probate 1849 on the MO website, but it doesn't list a wife and I think it's the same from another list which has him as being 29 in 1850, which would have him as 19 when John was born, so possible, but only kind of probable - don't you think? Does anyone know, or can suggest where they would have landed? Was this a normal route? Why the Kentucky to Missouri route? Both locations seem to have a strong German population, was this normal back then? What religion they might have been? (my dad's family was catholic, but back then??) I have no clue if they married here or there? Came over together or seperately? Any and all help would help. Thank you Julie --------------------------------- Stay in the know. I have the same problem, I go back and read if I am doing the date right, I am. Still won't work for me. Help would be appreciated. Carol
Where was Lena Stephenson,Il-Being borrn in 1937,I never heard of the place. I wonder if you might be able to help me-I am stuck no matter which way that I turned.I have been searching her for nearly four years and it seems that the information that I have on her is wrong. With this said, let me start at the beginning. In an obit My gfather had a sister,Ida Weintraub Hertzberg & two brothers. I thought that perhaps she and husband settled in Chicago as did her mother and brothers. The infomation that I have states that she came from Latvia with her husband Joselph and children in 1904 I wrote to see if I could find more.but in the past as now, genners come up with the same.I wrote to Idas daughter. The answer that she gave was that we were not related.I sent for her dc and when I received it the parents were different so I knew thay it was not the right one.The parents are Philip & Mollie WEINTRAUB Mollie is a nick name and Philip I have nothing on.So I am starting over. Can you see what you can do in finding her-them!
Hello Johann, I inadvertently dropped your reply into my junk box and found it by accident as I was getting ready to empty it. In your last mail you said you wondered as to what happened to Hubert Dohmann. Well rest assured, he settled in West Point, Lee Co., Iowa and I would guess that he died there as he and wife Anna are still listed on the 1930 census at ages 73 and 69 resp. in the same house on Madison Street. Since you may not be a subscriber to Ancestry.com I've made it easy for you and plucked the family data as it appears in each census year from 1900 to 1930. I didn't do 1880 as he is still single, living with the Schroeder family. Please note the spelling of the surname in each census year. 1895 Iowa State Census: Hubert DOHMAN, age 38, born Prussia, page 962, residence: West Point, Lee Co. 1900 US Federal Census, West Point, Lee Co., IA, residence: Madison Street DOHMANN, Hubert 43 .........Anna 38, mother of 8/4 living .........Anna 17, dau. b. Jan 1883 .........Mary 11, dau. b. Apr 1889 .........Lizzie 9, dau b. Dec 1890 .........Rosa 3, dau. b. Oct 1896 1910 US Federal Census, West Point, Lee Co., IA DOHMAN Hubert J. 53 [someone corrected the name to read: Hubert JR Dohman] .......Anne A., 48 .......Lizzie B., 19 .......Rosa F., 12 .......Alvis K, 9 [his name was 'Alois'=German spelling; later 'Aloysius' Am. spelling; .......Vincent J., 6 1920 US Federal Census, West Point, Lee Co., IA Mabel Baker was the census taker on Jan. 7, 1920 and both she and the Folks at Ancestry.com as well as Genealogy.com did a real number on the Dohmann family in 1920. It took me hours of genealogical gymnastics to find them. Here is a textbook case as to what can happen to a rather simple name through misunderstanding, mis-reading, mis-transcribing, and mis-indexing. I knew from the 1900 census that Hubert owned his house on Madison, free and clear. So the thought that he might have moved to another state seemed unlikely (knowing how Germans like to hold on to their property once they own it). Here is how I located the family. I went back to the 1910 census and jotted down the names of some of his neighbors. When I located one of the neighbors in 1920, Hubert was not listed. So I moved one census page forward - no Hubert -, then one census page backward, and voila, I found him. Mabel the census taker had spelled his name correctly as 'Dohman' but the 'D' was hard to recognize / decipher. I still was curious as to how Hubert Dohman might be listed in the Index at Ancestry.com. So I used a little trick, instead of entering both the first name and last name of a person, I only entered 'Hubert' and had Ancestry.com tell me what person was living in West Point in 1920 whose first name was Hubert. Here he is: Hubert J. Dobinson, then someone added in parenthesis [Hubert D Doleman] and under place of birth, this unknown person added again in parenthesis [West Prussia / Westpreussen]. When I clicked on the name, up came Hubert DOHMAN. Next I went to Genealogy.com, searching for Hubert DOHMAN in 1920 in Lee Co., IA: Here is what came up: DAHMAN, Hubert J., Age:63, Birthplace:WEST, State:Iowa, County:LEE, Locale: WEST POINT. Now then, here is the family as it appears on the (actual) 1920 census: DOHMAN, Hubert J, age 63; born in Westphalia [someone misread 'West Prussia'] ........Anna M., 58 ........Rosa F., 22 ........Aoysius R, 19 [should be 'Aloysius'] ........Vincent J B, 16 (I suppose 'Lizzie' was married by then). 1930 Federal Census, West Point, Lee Co., IA DOHMANN, Hubert J., age 73 .........Anna A., age 69 .........Vincent J., 26 - Salesman in Grocery Store; 1930 Federal Census, Madison, Lee Co., IA DOHMAN, Aloysius, age 28, born abt. 1902 in Iowa, occupation: butcher in meat market; ........Marie, 23 ........Betty M., 2 years, 10 months; ........Aloysius, 1 The Aloysius Dohman family lives on 26th Street in Madison (or Avenue C/D) in the same house as: Frame, Theodore, 65 b. Iowa, Par: German; .......Elizabeth, 62, b. Iowa, Par: German; .......Jerome, 30, b. Iowa, Laborer in fork hoe company .......Bernard, 25, b. Iowa, barber. Is it possible that Theodore and Elizabeth Frame were Marie's parents? 1930 Federal Census, Bloomington, McLean Co., IL DOHMANN, Rose, age 33, b. abt. 1897 in Iowa; trained nurse, works in hospital. Rose DOHMANN has a room with a woman named Lena FEICKE, age 45, widow and son Arthur D. Feicke, age 11. Now I'm curious as to which of these men was your ancestor? I also did some checking on Siddessen: population in 2003: 500+ persons. There must have been a reason why a small village like Siddessen was mentioned in some of the records you have. I would say, that this is most likely Hubert's place of birth. The next larger city is Brakel, both Siddessen and Brakel belong to the District (county) of Höxter (county seat). You did not say so, but I assume that your ancestors were Catholic, yes? Unfortunately, the LDS has no records for Siddessen. There are some listed for Höxter, but that would have been too far for the family to attend. You may want to contact someone at the local level to find out where the church records are archived. Masugu, Thanks so much for your help.I already had most of this info. What I am in need of is Max and Theresias marriage record.I think they must have gotten married in NYC. In the 1860 NY census I found Max listed as Max Harder, living with the Gebhardts, listed as a bootmaker. Can't seem to find Theresia in the 1860 census.I am also in need of birth records of the 3 oldest children, born in NY. Otto(Arthur Otto) Harter March 17, 1859, may have been born out of wedlock. As I mentioned Max was not listed with a family of his own in 1860. I have Otto's death cert, and his birthdate is listed. Charles W Harter was born in 1862. I know he died in Canova, S.D. Mary Harter (my great grandmother) was born Mar 14, 1864. I have her d.c. Any direction in which to point me for the 3 births and the mariage record? Am looking for anything while they were in NY.They were all in Lena, Stephenson, IL by 1869. Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!! 09-11-06 I am still looking for John/Johann Meisinger who arrived in the Port of New York on July 18, 1854. He may be listed on a Hamburg passenger list which I do not have access to. We do not live near a LDS Family Library. The film numbers would probably be 0470835 Bd.5 or 0470836 Bd. 6 - 7. Dates 1853 Jul - 1854 Apr & !854 Apr - 1854 Dec. Any help would be appreciated. I remember of hearing the Domke name in Presque Isle, County, MI. Many thanks, Della M. Meisinger
Thank you
