I would check with your local library and they could explain how to use it. I had to do the same thing. I am a volunteer librarian at the Yakima Valley Genealogical Society and we have access to online services, but we do not have Ancestry. Some of the other librarians do though and they will get you into it on their password so that we can look for things. Hope you can access it at your house. It is so much better that way. You don't have to hurry. Darlene
Thanks, Darlene. However, when I go to my library online site I don't see anything there that indicates online services. I live in Houston but have my library card through Fort Bend County. I may try to get a library card in Harris county to see if that will allow me to access the Houston Public Library online--although both counties are in Houston. All I want to do is check a name in the 1930 census. My LDS local center, which is normally open on Saturday morning until 1 p.m., was closed today for some reason. Regarding the messages about researching at home using the library or ancestry: how do you access the library online? I have a library card for Fort Bend County in Houston, TX, and was told you could access ancestry through HeritageQuest if you had a libary card. I was told you just search the library catalog online using genealogy as the keyword, and that HeritageQuest would come up. Well, I tried that and got about 3,600 book listings instead. Can someone suggest how this dummy can do this at home? Thanks, all. Joanne Schmidt --------------------------------- All-new Yahoo! Mail - Fire up a more powerful email and get things done faster.
Go to the home page: hit census ... Put surname in . I leave (all) for what year, Then State.. I have a library card, But I don't use it here. You were on the books instead of census.. I have been on Ancestry for many years. My search of passengers hasn't been productive on line, so cannot recommend it for that. But for Census it's tops. You can search by birth year, by name, by county, by state (if you're game to try) and also different spellings of either surname or given name, or country of origin. For any of you considering subscribing....divide the fee by 12 and you'll see just how much it's costing by comparison to traveling to libraries, copying charges and the parking fees. I am home and can work on genealogy any time of the day. Check the Ancestry web site to see what is offered. The Census searching has improved 100% since I first subscribed. Ruth
I speak German, so that's no problem. They were from Bayern, Hessen, and the Alsace. Get yourself a good German dictionary learn the basic words for birth, marriage and death for your films at LDS you will need some basic's for the films. Paul, The type of information you are looking for would be more likely available at the LDS History Center as the Ancestry.com site is mostly this country. You still need to write away to the court house where they applied for citizentionship to obtain naturalization papers and ancestry doesn't have the films from overseas as does the LDS. It's great for the census and maybe some ship arrivals. The Federal Building archives in your area has ancestry on their computers as well as many films but overseas is LDS. 09-30-06 Hi Everyone, I'm still looking for place of origin for John/Johann Meisinger and his wife to be Anna Gruber but I did find something interesting while looking for new research web sites. I found Answers.com. I typed in Meisinger Bavaria and the last item that was on the page were some names that I was interested in - Meisinger, Guth and Selker. After I clicked on it it wanted to know if I wanted to put it into my Family Tree Maker which I did. One of the persons was a Barbara Meisinger married to a Lawrence Herman with one child Joseph A. Barbara was born 21 May 1816 in Bavaria. Her husband was born 22 Aug 1816. My husband's great grandfather Jo hn/Johann Meisinger was born in 1814. This family settled in Clarion, PA which is where my husband's ancestors settled after first living in Buffalo, NY for 1 year. On the 1880 census they lived down the street from them or close. They were also shoemakers. I am wondering if they could be brother and sister. I haven't found them on a passenger list yet as I do not know when they came to this country. I couldn't find them on Ancestry yet. Their child Joseph was born in Bavaria in 1851 so they must have emmigrated later. Maybe I'll find the Meisinger place of origin yet. Have a good weekend everyone. Beautiful here in Minnesota today. Thanks, Della M. Meisinger I haven't been receiving Saxony Roots lately either.
I do not know the answers to your question, but here may be some options for you. The Family History Centers (LDS) in your area have free access to ancestry.com Also your local library may also have that free option for members.
