10-08-06 Hi Everyone, Finally have DSL. Still unable to find more information on John/Johann Meisinger who arrived in the port of NY on July 18, 1854. I did come across a Lawrence Herman married to Barbara Meisinger both born in 1816 with a son Joseph A. Herman who arrived in 1859 according to census film. I haven't been able to find them on any passenger list. They settled in Clarion as did the John and Anna Gruber Meisinger. I think that Barbara coul be a sister of John as he was born in 1814 in Bavaria as was Lawrence, Barbara and Joseph. Hope someone can help. Love receiving emails. Hello List, How is everyone today? Wolf, the List Administrator maintains an excellent database if you'd like to input your ancestor's information. In previous messages, many people outline a lot of interesting information about their ancestry. This would be wonderful for the Ancestors Database. If you'd like to only enter Surnames, that's fine or you can add more detailed information. It would be great for you or others to find a match. Ancestors Database (in English) http://www.saxonyroots.com/Ancestors_Database/index.php?lan=en -OR- Ahnen Datenbank (in German) http://www.saxonyroots.com/Ancestors_Database/index.php?lan=de Hope you will check it out soon !! Have a good day ... Kathleen PS You may not see your information show up immediately. If you check back in five to seven days it should be there. Hi and MANY THANKS TO ALL who answered my question. Funny how one word can mean so many things. In this case it was archer or working with wood as he was a cabinet maker. I do need some help in translating what is written on the page on this site shown below. There is a picture and all is written in German. Thanks in advance. Mary http://wiki.genealogy.net/wiki/Bogner
Dear Ursula, BINGO! You hit it. He was a cabinet maker. It must have listed his occupation. Thank you so much. I was kind of hoping it was a town. Many people better than I have searched for Saver-Xavier-Frank Dess. You can write me direct at madess@adelphia.net if you want. Maybe you could shed some light on the subject. Hello Mary, The English definition of the historical occupation of Bogner or Pogner is "archer". For additional information you may want to view the woodcut of a Pogner/Bogner at http://wiki.genealogy.net/wiki/Bogner You say you can't find out where Xavier Dess died? In what state/county/township did he settle after his arrival? Ursula. Mary Ann Dess wrote: > A big thanks to you. I will try to track that villate down now. This man > is the family mystery. Hello Mary, First of all, I don't see any 'tt' in the word - I read it as Pogner. I hate to burst your bubble but the column that contains the word "Pogner or Poyner" is the OCCUPATION column not the 'Place of Origin' column. If you look on the other pages of the ship's manifest you will find the same occupation for immigrants from Hessen. I assume C. Gustavus the captain of the Adler must have made an error when he transfered the data from the departure manifest issued in Bremen to the one he presented to US customs in New York. You can rest assured there is no town or village in either Hessen or Bavaria by the name of Pogner/Poyner. Ursula Mary Ann Dess wrote: > A big thanks to you. Hi to all - This is the first time I've piped up but I just couldn't resist sharing... According to Wikipedia, when I entered POGNER, I got these two bits of information. Quebec French Lexicon Crier|to obtain|In Europe, to cry. See also pogner. Pogner|get, grab|Can also mean to be sexually attractive, successful. Happy Full Moon week!!! Hi Mary, There is a town in Wisconsin that is called Poynett or Poynettte. It seems to have a lot of German settlers in the 1800's. Maybe there is something similarly named in Germany? Hi Mary, Could it be Pognest, or Poynest? It really doesn't appear to be two t's at the end, to me, and the 'g', could possibly be a y. Sorry I am not able to be of more help, but thought I would just throw out those possibilities. Good luck! My Dotterweich ancestor Conrad came to US in 1852 on the Merwede. Two sister and a brother came at the same time. Hi, Mary, this looks really strange to me... could it be a 'mis-spelling' or 'mis-reading' ?? It might be worthwhile to see a scan of this, maybe someone else could read something entirely different with a more 'meaningful' sense ??
