I read with interest your discussion. My grandfather, Oswald Carl Buttig, in the 1920 United States Census listed his birth place as: Saxony (Kingdom State) {Sachsen (Kgr./Land in Bundesrepublik) Saxony (Kingdom?State); Deutschland} and his Father's Birth Place as: Saxony (Kingdom State). In some research on(www.flaggenlexikon.de/fdtprvsx.htm), it stated that in 1816 - creation of the Province of Saxony from the following territories: .from the Kingdom of Saxony to Prussia ceded territories; . the Prussian territories Altmark and Magdeburg Town. The formerly to Mainz belonging possessions Erfurt Town and Eichsfeld. And, in 1944 partition of the Province of Saxony into the Provinces of Magdeburg and Halle-Merseburg, the Governmental District to Erfurt came to Thuringia. And in 1945, unification of the Provinces of Magdeburg and Hale-Merseburg, with the country Anhalt to the country Province of Saxony - Anhalt. I am still trying to find a map which would show the exact location of the Kingdom of Saxony in about 1816. Any ideas? Thanks Wolf, I was just checking if anyone out there MIGHT have some info on either ofthe names. Straingely, there was another Charles H. Jaep 10 year younger living in NJin 1880 and the wife's mother's name was Caroline..one of my Charles'schildren was named that. May be common with German families though. Therewas another Jaep in Philly in 1900 also and one settled in Camden Co.Haddenfield area and my Grandfather was in a small town just outsideHaddenfield. I think these may be relatives and am trying to contact themas well. Thanks for the tip. I'll try the German Phone Book.Never thought of that. Hello listers.. My GGrandfather, Arjen RUSSMANN, emigrated from Dornum,Hannover, in 1870,according to 2 US census'. He was naturaliazed in 1879 in the Circuit Court of Chicago, IL as a Minor..(he was born in 1858 so was 21 in 1879..either his father died prior to that time or he never became a citizen). His parents,Hermann and Sophia RUSSMANN were born in Germany.,,don't know where. I believe Arjen had a brother Haro/Hero RUSSMANN who is listerd on the 1880 Chicago census living with wife Alwina one block from where Arjen lived in 19and was naturalized in either 1892 or 1872..probbly 1872..believe transcription was a misprint.have sent for his naturalization records. lived in the same neighborhood as Arjen and his family in Chicago and was born in 1850. Haro was married to Alwina. Herman and Sophia are buried in Chicago in the RUSSMANN family plot. I have no information on Arjen prior to his naturalization in 1879 and marriage in 1883 in Chicago to Katharina FRIEDERICHS, from Esens. His name and village location indicate he is from the Ostfriesland area. Katharina's family (Ricklef and Margeth (nee SCHIPPERS) emigrated on the sailing ship Albert, departing Bremen, arriving in New York on 02 July 1868. I cannot find Arjen and his family however..and am wondering if there were other ports that Ostfrieslanders emigrated from of if he and his family's records were in the Bremen papers which were destroyed. I have looked at quite a few name variations..without sucess...am about to begin researching the New Orleans Paseenger Lists..but thought that maybe someone on the list could comment.. Thanks.. Hello, I am new to this list. I am just starting my research in Germany and need a little help. I have these 2 names and they are not in your surname list. Hoping that someone has heard of them. My gGrandfather's marriage registration says his name was Edmund Henrich Carl Jaep b 22 May 1850 and he was from Hanover area of Germany. According to the 1900 census of Philadelphia he had changed his name to Charles Henry Jaep and had been in this country 38 years, coming in 1871. His wife was who he married in 1881 was Wilhelmina Happih / Hoppick was from Pr. Hesse, Germany and she had been in this country 23 years from the 1900 census. She was born Feb 1868. They had 5 children in Philadelphia and Charles had a Tobacco and pipe shop 16 N. 6th, Philly. Can anyone stear me in the right direction. I have tryed to find their names on the lists of immigration on Ancestry without results. I don't know where to turn next. Any help appriciated. Ann Brown Florida

Hi Ann, looks like you are 'stuck'.. :-(( Yes, you are right, the surname 'JAEP' is NOT a very common name and you should also look for ' JÄP'.. There are 2 entries in our database: http://www.saxonyroots.com/Ancestors_Database/ but not much more info about them. Just saying they were living in Jena, Saxony in 1928.. What about going the other way around.. The German telephone directory: http://www.dastelefonbuch.de/ has 30 listings for that surname.. what about contacting them ?? They 'might' have some more info for you... Hello Maria, How do you know that they came through the Port of Galveston? And where [what country] did they come from? The passenger list index for the Port of Galveston does not show anyone by the name of Jeneralsky Jeneralski Yeneralsky Yeneralski Generalsky Generalski They do offer a search by year, however, when you click on the year 1897 or any other year, an error message appears. I have the feeling that there is no direct access at this time. Ursula Maria Buffalo wrote: > I'm trying to find what ship my family came to this country. Thank you for your efforts. Will pursue the trail of Goeden at Port Washington as I believe that Washington County was originally part of Port Washington County. in 1946. The Schall lead does not appear to be of value as dates do not agree with immigrastion date we have. Could be that a stop in Philadelphia was made before proceeding to Wisconsin. Will double check this. Again thanks for your help. John.
