Good morning, As Malte stated correctly, as of January 1, 2006 the postage for a regular letter from Germany to the States is EURO 1.70 (not EURO 1.55 anymore). Postage airmail: Weight Small envelopes: EUR 1.70 Up to 20 g (approx. 0.7 oz, this is about 2 pages plus the envelope) EUR 2.00 21-50 g (up to 1.76 oz) Letter size envelopes: EUR 3.00 Up to 50 g (up to 1.76 oz) EUR 4.00 51-100g (up to 3.5 oz) EUR 8.00 101-500 g (up to 1.1 lbs) EUR 12.00 501-1,000 g (up to 2.2 lbs) EUR 28.00 1,001-2,000 g (up to 4.4 lbs) There is a good chance that this might increase again next year again. The German post office seems to make these decisions on December 30 going into effect on January 1. Particularly cute was the fact that my local post office did not have a 70 cent stamp until July this year, i. e. seven months after this postage mandatory and I had to put 4 different stamps on each envelope to come up with the necessary postage. For currency conversion I can recommend the website: www.oanda.com <http://www.oanda.com/> Good luck! Thanks to all who have given me information on German postage. As usual, this is the place to ask and get answers! Betty FL
Ursula, If we only accept mail from people in our address books, anyone we haven't communicated with directly will be blocked anyway. And that won't work unless you put everyone you send email to in your address book, which I don't. I save my address book for people I expect to communicate with on a regular basis. Otherwise it would be huge. That said, those of us with spam-blocking software should try to remember to add the address of anyone we email to our verified list right away. That will ensure that the receiver's reply is not blocked. I personally often forget to do this, but I do go into my spam software at least once a day to accept any messages that I want that haven't been verified. So if someone sends me email who doesn't want to verify, they don't have to. I'll verify for them. My apologies to anyone I offend, but spam-blockers are a very effective tool. It's been a long time since I got email about Viagra or about a fortune awaiting me in Nigeria. Susan ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ursula B. Wolf has replied that he has some German stamps. Should I put them on a self-addressed envelope? Betty FL
Hello, I find it most annoying to receive mail from list members who then refuse to accept replies unless one registers with them all in the name of 'controlling spam'. Anyone wanting to control spam - if that's what they consider mail from the GPL - should not mail queries. Apparently some people don't know that the easiest way to control spam is to only accept email from people/lists in your address book. It's as simple as that! Ursula from Michigan
Standard airmail letters (upto 20 grams weight) from Germany to the US actually cost 1,70 Euro. That are abt 2,12 USD. Need help finding Henry Busch born 1867 Germany. Trying to find 1900 to 1930 census in Iowa Falls, Iowa. Any help would be appreciate. Jerrald Lloyd
Most every school has transfer students in Germany and they have computors and need money. They should be willing to help recieve and remail your letters,e-mail, or send you stamps. Course I just hand my letter to the postmaster and it is taken care of. Too, most every military person in Germany has a computor. And I find the US embasy is sometimes helpful. Germans themselves are a bit leary of Americans What with the spying that is going on, I cannot blame them. But if one arranges the inquiry so as to give the reciever a feeling of being helpfully useful, That is, it is best to be up front and admit that one needs their help, they will respond. But when I was a transfer student and doing some translating in Europe and wanted to get hold of someone in the states, I put my tax dollars to use and went straight to the Embasy.Ralph A Bauer Bar5@bright.net
Ursula, I have read often on these lists that IRC's are not that well-liked. I was able to order some German stamps from someone who had a note on a message that she would sell some, but I'm sorry that I no longer have her address. Perhaps if you send in a message that you are looking for German stamps, someone would be able to send you some. It might be worth a try. Florence ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ursula B. Sue, I was also fascinated by Don's tips for the surname charts. I took the opportunity to look up a new surname that has currently appeared in our family tree via a found letter (Passavant) and found out that there were very few records for it (as for your Fingado). I went immediately to www.telefonbuch.de and looked up the name. I found a handful of people with the name living in the area of my ancestors (and a couple outside the area) as well as a bunch of companies with the name in their titles. Looking up Fingado there returned 26 results, of which most seem to be private individuals. Rosenheim seems to be a popular town in the list. Although it is clear that this is a bit of a long shot I do intend to write/call the people involved to see if they are interested in family history and have any information about their forefathers. YMMV of course, but for those of us with slightly less usual names in our trees this could be a reasonable proposition. Has anybody had experience of trying this method? My German is fluent, and I also live over here so no worries about waking someone in the middle of the night if I decide to call, but any tips regarding approach? I know this can be a touchy subject for some people, particularly the older generation. Sorry if this is a bit off topic. Just a whole lot of work and reading every history book or relevency. Passenger list, Goshenhoppen Registers, cemetery listings of the township that were family cemeteries (that was the big one and led me right to the place). Checking patent/warrant records plus old surveys. Lots and lots of work...plus being willing to pay for some of this items. Hello Betty, To learn more about International Reply Coupons go to: http://www.deutschepost.de/ Then click on No. 3 - Dispatching Letters - Sending mail to other countries then click on "International Mail Products" then "International Reply Coupons. While the site is written in English, the info is written for German customers. You can go to your local Postoffice to obtain the IRCs. Hello Betty, it used to be that one had to go to the local postoffice and purchase what is known as an "International Reply Coupon". That was before the German Postal System became privatized and before they had the EURO. Presently, a standard airmail letter is Euro 1.55. Before you purchase an International Reply Coupon you should consult with the person to whom you will be sending it as I have heard in some cases these coupons were no longer accepted by the German Postal System. The IRC can only be used for purchasing stamps in the country where the letter will be mailed. Perhaps you may want to 'google' to find out more info.
