    1. [G-P-L] Ships to Canada
    2. kajh
    3. Hi List - As of this month images of ship manifests came on-line created by the Libraries and Archives of Canada. It is called ~ Passenger Lists Search, 1865-1922 Actually, the search function is not available for individual passengers and their surnames. However, you can enter Quebec or Montreal or any other port in Canada. This will pull up the names of ships. Click on "view image" of a ship or time frame of your choice. You'll view the actual ship manifest. Then you can go page by page to see the actual passengers who were on-board. One interesting note: I pulled up this ship as an example: Ship: ALBANIA Shipping Line: Cunard Steamship Co. Ltd. Departure Port and Date : Southampton, England - 1911-05-02 Arrival Port(s) and Date: Montreal, Que. - [1911-05] Quebec, Que. - 1911-05-16 Ref.: RG 76/ Microfilm: T-4775 Going page by page of the ship manifest, there was one page written as "to U.S.A.". There was one passenger from Germany with a destination of Chicago, IL. Not all passengers intending to come to the U.S. came to U.S. ports directly. Their goal, upon completion of the Ships to Canada database is: Canadian ports of: -Quebec (1865-1921) -Halifax (1881-1922) -Saint John (1900-1912) -North Sydney (1906-1908) -Vancouver (1905-1912) -Victoria (1905 to 1912) URLs: http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/passenger/001045-100.01-e.php or http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/passenger/index-e.html Enjoy! 3. Dear Sherry, There were vessels frequently departing the German ports, i.e. Hamburg and Bremen, for Quebec directly. Most of what I have seen is passenger lists, ending in US ports. I know this is a long shot, I am trying to find passenger lists which would have indicated Quebec as a landing point, I understand a lot of lists did not survive, prior to 1850 or havent been documented as yet. thank you for any help on this puzzle. 3. Hi Cindy, Thanks for the information. The AOL translator website is very similar to the 'Google' translation feature; the one that I use regularly. However, the real point of my query was how do I obtain access to the information that the poster has chosen not to release for public consumption. Strange, it seems to me, that he (Ralf) would even place the entry on the Internet database http://gedbas.genealogy.net if he (Ralf Kossan >> ralf@kossan.de) was unwilling to release the data relating to Johann Friedrich Wilhelm SCHWANDT. Since the full name posted to the database is identical to the person of my focus I feel driven to leave no boulder unturned in the chance that Ralf's SCHWANDT and mine are one and the same individual. 3. Hello Cas, There were 2 types of immigration, 1) direct immigration and 2) indirect immigration. It's actually were easy to understand. For example: 1) The immigrant embarked on a ship at Bremen and disembarked in New York 2) The immigrant boarded a ship in Bremen to England and from there, usually Liverpool or Southampton, boarded an oceangoing vessel to America. Thus, upon arrival in the US, only the voyage from Liverpool to New York would be listed on the manifest. Now regarding their hometown, this may be a little more complicated but one of the best sites I have found with maps, and explanations about Hesse-Nassau can be found under http://members.cox.net/hessen/hesse.htm Not that it will solve all your problems but I hope it'll help.
