I have no information about the immigration date, (I think it happened in the period between 1850 and 1865), about the ship name not even about the port of destination. Wilhelm Koch immigrated with his wife Elisa, one son Otto Koch (Born in 1837) and two daugthers. They lived for some years at the city of Salvador (state of Bahia), Brazil, where his son Otto (my ggrand father) married with Johanna Carolina Sophia Schröder. I´ll be gratefull for any information. 3. Hi! I'm new to the list. My name is Bonnie Manis. I've only been researching my ancestry for about a year. I've been having a really hard time finding info on my Dads side of the family. My great grandparents, Ludwig and Johanna Schwartz along with I believe three children, one being born on the ship, immigrated to America in 1872. The childrens names were Rickie (F), William (M), and Anna (F). Can anyone help? Thanks, Bonnie

    2. Wetzig, Douglas J. (POC)
    3. My name is Doug Wetzig. I live outside Cleveland, Ohio. I have been doing family research since 1992. My GGGF was Karl Heinrich Wetzig who came to the states after 1852. I believe he arrived in Boston first since his first child was born there in 1854. I have never been able to find his or his wife's passage record. His side of the Wetzig's came from the Hannover area, Neustadt, Hildesheim and Marktkirche. Before this it was the Teblen or Doeblen area. My GGGM was Anna Werneke from Walle near Verden area? For the past year I have been trying to link up the various Wetzig families around the world. I would appreciate any help anybody can offer. Best Regards, Doug Douglas.Wetzig@PolyOne.com

    1. Re: [G-P-L] The Michael Schmitt Family
    2. Jean Ludwig
    3. Hi....thanks for taking the time to check this info. The Michael Schmitt's didn't change their name to Smith. Michael died in 1880 and his wife Anna Marie died in 1891. Both are buried at St. Mary Cemetery in Westphalia and share a tombstone as Michael and Anna M. Schmitt. I have a picture of the stone which I took a couple of years ago. There are also "Smith" buried in that cemetery. Michael's son Peter got married in Oct. of 1874. Have a Certified Copy of Record of Marriage which gives his name as Peter Schmitt, age 28 residing in Portland, MI. His brother Michael was his best man. Peter's sister Ann Gertrud who was 2 years younger than Peter got married in May of 1874. Her name is given as Anna Gertrud Schmitt. Peter was the first ot change the name of SMITH according to family members. They would have immigrated before 1852 as Peter was born in Michigan in 1847. Don't know of any connection with the John Mauer's. Also....Peter was only 13 years older than his wife. The book "The Story of St. Mary's Westphalia 1836 - 1986 tells that the first settlers to Westphalia in 1836 lead by Father Anton Kopp journeyed from Bremen to New York. They took the Erie Canal to Detroit. From Detriot they traveled the Old Chicago Road (now Michigan-US 12) as far as Ypsilanti. At this point they took the Dexter Trail - passing through Ann Arbor, Dester, Chelsea, Stockbridge, Mason, presently Lansing, Bengal and Dallas, and finally west into Ionia County. First to Lyons and then Ionia, where the Dexter Trail ended. Many others took this same route. There is a "First Family Registry in this book and it tells where they came from, when they arrived (1846), the names, ages of everyone in the family and that they settled in Section 18 or 19. It would seem easier to find this many family members in a group but maybe the ships records got distroyed? Jean >Hello Jean, >While some of the SCHMITT descendants stated on the 1900 census that they immigrated in >1846, none of the family members appear on the 1850 census and only John, 29 [b 1831], Adam >27, [b. 1833], Michael 70 [b 1810?] and wife Anna [45] appear on the 1860 census for >Westphalia Twp [all under "SMITH"]. 3. Hi Folks; Just an FYI in case you weren't aware of it: a group of professional genealogists at the Family History Library has put together a "Palatine Project" (www.progenealogists.com/palproject/) which includes some pretty good poop on early German immigration. Their opening blurb reads: "The Palatine Project--Reconstructed Passenger Lists, 1683-1819 The Palatine Project is an ongoing effort, using sources from German speaking countries as well as early colonial American sources, to annotate and/or reconstruct the passenger lists of Germans who came to America in the first large wave of emigration in the 18th century. These annotated lists will provide a "bridging the gap" tool for identifying the original emigrants to America while identifying sources that indicate where they came from in their ancestral country. This is an ambitious project and will require many years. Its success will depend on contributions of information, finances, and other assistance from the public and genealogical communities." They go on to say: "Although the primary project initially will be to annotate the passenger lists of the Pennsylvania German Pioneers identified in Strassburger and Hinki's 1727-1808 lists, we plan to eventually annotate and reconstruct (where necessary) lists for New England, Nova Scotia, New York, Virginia, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, North Carolina, and South Carolina German settlements as well." Cheers, Masugu
